collections in your credit report.. how long does it stay there?

well, i just got my credit report and saw a collections notice from So.Cal Edison ..

found out the account i closed 6 months ago still has balance.. and they have WRONG address.. (Should I argue about this?, since it's not my fault that I didn't get the final bill?)

anyways, how long does the record stay in the CR ? .. it annoys me that I have bad transaction.. bad taste in my mouth...

will it be cleared after I pay the full amt? .. or I'm thinking about disputing with the Privacy Guard.. credit protection company, that charges whooping $80/year..

it will be cleared after you pay
That is not true unless they are being very nice or you get them to agree to that. The entry will be updated to show a zero balance but the fact that it was placed for collection is there for 7 years.

thing is, they have the freaking WRONG address, and this isn't my old address or anything similar.. they have address that I've never heard in my life.

and they're saying i told them the address... which is BS..

what i think happened was, the next resident who came into my old apartment changed the address, and they screwed it.

and also, i've never recieved any calls/letters from collection dept. (meaning the information they have is wrong, and they should be reliable for it.)

would this fact help my case or go against it? 😛

Call the big three reporting agencies and claim identity fraud...

You're records will be frozen and sealed and new files will be started for you.

you mean i'll have to start new credit report? ..

there hasn't been any 'fraud'.. but just mistakes on their part..

If there is a mistake, simply contact the merchant and have them correct it. If they don't/won't, dispute the entry with the credit bureaus and the merchant will have to prove that it's a valid debt.
