My view: He lied to the UN and "KNEW" it at the time but continued to do so leading us into a false war. That will never be forgiven or forgotten by me, period.

What did the GOP flip flop on since 2004?

I didn't state the GOP flip flopped since 2004, I said they flip flopped. They have turned into a bororw and spend machine that even rivals the Democrats. They have absolutely no fiscal policy or direction. They have become a war mongering, fear driven machine (that part, I'm not sure they flip flopped on however as they may have always been that).

By the way, nice stab in there about him not supporting "white" democrats before. Not long before the race card was brought up.

Their opinion of John McCain?

There's a difference between liking someone and voting for him. I'd much rather vote for the Bush of 2004 than McCain.

It's people like you who make the case against democracy.

Not sure where the 'way right' is coming from; the court is only conservative relative to the ridiculous pro-criminal excesses of the Warren years.

If you want to maintain the current Court setup, McCain with a Democratic senate is much more likely to do that.

As a key reason, Powell said: "I would have difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that's what we'd be looking at in a McCain administration."

If you listened carefully to his reasoning behind supporting Obama you would know.

Know what? That Colin Powell is a RINO on domestic issues?

You don't have to be a RINO to acknowlege the divisiveness injected into this campaign by the GOP. Arabs are terrorists, muslums are terrorists, Obama is an arab muslum, only red states are pro-american

McCain has already said he would push to appoint more conservative judges, therefore making the court more right. This is the exact thing Powell said he didn't want. You and I might have our respective positions ideologically, which is fine, and the powers that be have there own positions. Due to this, we need a check that will hold in potential harmful ideas in check, both from the left and the right. Having a court that is to the center is one of the better checks that we can have, to ensure that even as we try to shape the country in our own ideological ideal, we do not do it harmfully.

And any divisiveness that may or may not exist in 2008 doesn't chance the fact that Colin Powell has been pro-choice, pro-affirmative action, pro-government healthcare, anti ANWR etc, for the past 20 years.

There's a reason Bush told him to go pound sand on these issues from day 1.

It's just another +1 for Obama, another -1 for McCain, in an election where McCain is barely keeping his head above water.

Bush fired him 2 weeks after election day.

That's certainly a good reason to not endorse Kerry at the time! :p

The tent is big; that doesn't mean that the party platform has to change to accommodate them.

We definitely don't need any more Social Conservative in the Court.

You're entitled to believe that, but in 2001, Powell joined up to serve a President who promised to put more 'social conservatives' in the Court.

Didn't bother him then.
And a died in the wool Republican partisan would never be able to re-evaluate his beliefs and change his mind. Obviously Powell did and I think that's commendable.

You mean he flip flopped.

How many white liberal Democrats has Powell supported for anything?

Thank God we have somebody to parrot Rush Limbaugh here.

I am no giant Colin Powell fan, but he is still a quintessential organization man, and a man of ability. While an all too blind loyalty to the armed services is one of his faults, he is still an independent thinker, and a man almost born to lead. And one of great virtues is a sense of personal integrity and an ability to talk to all sides. He and someone like John Bolten are almost polar opposites because Powell does not pull rank, lecture, punish, or seek to impose his views on others.

What GWB did to Colin Powell, is IMHO, shameless, and I believe that for too long, Colibn Powell believed the cherry picked intel fed to him, simply because he could not believe that people like Rumsfeld and Cheney would lie. And yes, Colin Powell made a fool out of himself at the UN, as a dupe in the run up to the war. But when he learned that he was lied to, he had the integrity to correct it and went on record. And yes, GWB basically fired Powell on the principle that one good apple could spoil a whole bushel of rotten ones.

And Powell took his lumps silently, while his aide, Col. Wilkerson, roundly denounced John Bolten and prevented his confirmation as UN Ambassador, the facts emerged that Colin Powell had been defending his people in the State department from being bullied.

So a Colin Powell endorsement means something to me, and regardless of an Obama endorsement, I had hoped that the next President will use the talents of Colin Powell in his next administration. Regardless if its a Cabinet position or as a roving troubleshooter, Colin Powell has a lot of the right stuff, and deserves a chance to go out on top. At 71 years old, he also deserves all the rocking chair time he wants, but Colin has sent the signal, I still want to contribute. If I could advise our next President, I would recommend letting Powell pick the problems he wants to work on, and go from there.

Wow.

I'm a Colin Powell fan and this is pretty big. This election is like deciding which knee cap you want to have broken.
