Coldplay. Some thoughts.

I just heard "In My Place" for the first time, which is also my first exposure to Coldplay. It's really wonderful to see another band continue the distinctly beautiful English rock sound. The Beatles would be mighty proud. As much as I hate the English, they really have captured the way to make achingly beautiful pop songs. There is an orchestration and finesse to this sound that just isn't doable by American bands. Not that they should - American rock has had a distinctive sound, although it's less subtle and much more blunt in its imapct. Good for jumping up and down at a frat party, if that's your thing. It's not really mine. I've always prefered melancholic music, usually guitar-driven music, yet with the fuzz guitar at a minimum, and always dripping with tender, delicate and blissful melodies.

I love Coldplay; if "In My Place" is your first experience you should really pick up the new CD (A Rush of Blood to the Head). Their first CD is also fantastic, slightly more mellow, one could say Parachutes is the feminine side, Rush is the masculine side. I doubt I could pick a favorite song, but here's a rough list:

Everything is not Lost
Shiver
Yellow
Trouble
Politik
God Put a Smile on Your Face
The Scientist
Clocks
In My Place
A Rush of Blood to the Head
Amsterdam

Also, download some Doves tracks, namely "Satellites", "Pounding" and "Caught by the River."

They're very similar to Coldplay, focusing slightly more on melody if I had to say; singers voice is quite different but after a couple listens their new CD (The Last Broadcast) really got me, one of the best of 2003, along with A Rush of Blood to the Head from Coldplay.

True that. But to be honest I'm not a big fan of either one.

Radiohead was the product of a desperate music industry, drawing at straws to maintain the viability of modern rock. Everything after their first album was in some way a mimicry of other music. Despite the constant mentions of "sylistic" influences, Radiohead merely introduced dated electronic music style to legions of rock kiddies. Listen to Autechre, circe Incunubula and Tri Repetae to see "Radiohead" six years earlier.

IMO Coldplay sounds like a mimicry of Radiohead. Some of their stuff with the falsetto vocals and Vox'd Telecasters sounds derivative of the stuff RH did 6-8 years ago with The Bends/OK Computer.

Of course, electronic music is only a small piece of the big picture that is Radiohead (and, to most fans, the least satisfying piece). I can't really see how the wonderful OK Computer is "mimicry" of anything else. I regret to inform you that you are coming off as a bitter know-it-all.

I get really sick of every British band being compared to Radiohead - as if they are the be-all, end-all source for all English 'alternative' music. There really isn't a whole lot of similarity between Radiohead and Coldplay. I really liked OK Computer by Radiohead, but thats about it - I wasn't really that blown away by the Bends as everyone else was. Everything after OK Computer is just crap in my opinion, and aside from Creep, Pablo Honey was pretty mediocre also.

Rush of Blood to the Head is great, I think its significantly better than Parachutes. I like them both though. Rush seems to just be a lot 'richer' musically.

Other good British bands I like:
Travis - also compared to Radiohead a lot even though they are very distinct from them
James - broken up now, but perhaps my favorite british band. Get the 'Best of James' album for an introduction.
JJ72 - their first album was great, 2nd album I didn't really listen to all that much yet and don't think it was anywhere near as good. They were pretty big overseas - not really known here in the States. The most 'rock' type of this list.
Belle and Sebastian - a lot more mellow than any of the above
Catherine Wheel - sort of rock. Their early stuff was great. Last couple albums have been kind of bad.

Go to the dictionary and look up Mediocre and it will say "See Coldplay". Anybody that dares Compare them to Oasis yet the Beatles needs to have his head or ears examined.

I agree, that's how bad Coldplay sucks! I was embarrassed for them whe they performed at the Grammy's. Bands like Coldplay are the reason the Recording Industry is sucking ass as far as record sales go. There are only a limited number of fools that can be stupid enough to spend money on the crap.
