Coldheat Soldering Iron any good?

It's kind of hard to use compared to a regular soldering iron. The tip is actually two prongs. You have to short the two prongs to make the tip heat up. As Xionide said, that probably also puts current through whatever you're working on, although I've never had a problem with that.
 
I got one, I don't like it. It's only good for small solder jobs and for small components. Getting the solder to melt is a pain with this device.

Any electronics parts store should have soldering irons. Radioshack has some cheap ones that should work well enough for common stuff.

how cheap😉 yeah it would be something simple like a Mod Chip install
 
Hell noe. in an emergency, I got one at Fry's to fix a cell phone for my sister before flying back accross the country. They never told you that you have to short the VERY LARGE tip with something electrically conductive for it to work at all! It's a piece of trash. Not only that, but the tip broke the very first time my brother used it... I left it at his apartment after bringing it home.

I got mine for $5 online at elec-goldmine.com. Radioshack probably has them for about $10. If you have a local Fry's, they probably have soldering irons too.
 
I bought one a while ago when I was doing an emanage install on my car (thinking cool, no hot iron to burn through the carpet). Anyway used it all of 5 mins and the crappiness and inability to melt solder in a controlled manner anoyed the hell out of me so I whipped out the trusty 25w soldering iron and I did 10 wires in the time it took me to do 2 with the stupid ColdHeat. It's trash.

Yup good for simple jobs like wires, connectors. But as soon as it touches an ic of any kind you can potentially fry it.
