It's Official, Cold War II has been declared

Putin has been acting pretty weird the last couple of years and here is why.

What gain does Russia get from declaring the CW II?

What gain does the U.S. get in fighting the war?

Will the next President be able to difuse the war?

Will this trigger a Nuclear WWIII?

Lots of questions.

Do the resident AT experts have the answers as they always claim?

What is the Whitehouse response?

5-31-2007 Putin: U.S. has triggered new arms race

MOSCOW - President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that tests of new Russian missiles were a response to the planned deployment of U.S. missile defense installations and other forces in Europe, suggesting Washington has triggered a new arms race.

In a clear reference to the United States, he harshly criticized "imperialism" in global affairs and warned that Russia will strengthen its military potential to maintain a global strategic balance.

"It wasn't us who initiated a new round of arms race," Putin said when asked about Russia's missile tests at a news conference after talks in the Kremlin with Greek President Karolos Papoulias.

Putin described Tuesday's tests of a new ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads and a new cruise missile as part of the Russian response to the planned deployment of new U.S. military bases and missile defense sites in ex-Soviet satellites in Central and Eastern Europe.

Putin and other Russian officials have repeatedly rejected U.S. assurances that the planned missile defense installations are meant to counter a potential threat from nations such as Iran and pose no danger to Russia.

In one missile test Tuesday, a prototype of new Russia's intercontinental ballistic missile, called the RS-24, was fired from a mobile launcher at the Plesetsk launch site in northwestern Russia and its test warhead landed on target 3,400 miles away

Putin described the tests of new missiles conducted by Russia on Tuesday as a necessary response to the Western action.

This isn't about Russia gaining anything, its about Putin coming to end of his "legal" reign and looking for ways to extend it.

Putin is all talk. He knows Russia can't possibly win another Cold War. We took em to the mat the first go round and they are in ever worse shape now than they were during v1.0

He is just trying to prop himself up in the eyes of the Russian populace.

It is ironic that Bush economic policies and his rampaging all over the world in his military boots is making Russia very very rich. If there is one thing Russia has it is natural resources. It is no secret that Putin hates Bush, and this is a reaction against the US aggressiveness in trying to implement missile shields over Europe and the US. Not to mention the US increased number of US military boot prints all over the world, and especially close to the southern border of Russia.

China is also making new subs and developing their missiles as as answer to the missile shield programmes.

It's all hot air IMHO, Putin can't afford another CW, but if he insists- the end result will be the same, bankruptcy for Russia.

Russia makes great weapons.

If Russia starts to actually buy their own weapons they will go bankrupt.

Which is why his 'all talk' might actually work for him. He's insanely popular in Russia, and the US is incredibly hated. They see Russia slipping into almost a 3rd world nation, and if they could go back to the glory days of the Soviet Union when they had the biggest nukes, first in space, etc etc, they will want to. Even if it means giving up their 'democracy'.

The Iraq/Iran thing is really just old Cold War fear-induced paranoia under a new name, seasoned with the usual support for favored industries. Now that the Iraq war will end, the sense of fear must continue, and support for the defense/military/DHS/police/intel industries stays funded.
It's about power and money keeping what they have, and that takes control. Fear controls like no other method, especially in a 'free' democratic society.

Basis for this claim? I don't know a single expatriate Russian who cares for Putin.

Are you kidding? Putin is incredibly popular in Russia. Look at any popularity poll for Russia, and Putin has 70+%.

How many Russian ex-patriats have you polled for your study?

Despite a sustained assault on Russia's democratic institutions, Mr Putin enjoys a popularity rating just shy of 80 per cent and there is no doubt that many Russians would like to see him serve a third term.

and this is exactly why he must make the claim, he needs the laws changed, popularity alone won't do it

I visited back then. Their "Glory Days" are a figment of their imagination. The only thing they really had was a lot more attention IMO.

Frankly, Putin can take off his shoe and bang on the table threatening to bury us for all I care. I don't give a sh!t, I'm not in the least worried about the Russians, ignore 'em.

CWII? LOL what a snooze.

He's so far down on the radar screen of threats he'd have to unzipp his pants to talk.

*yawn*

The SS-24 isn't a new missile no matter how many times Putin says it is. He's just pissy that missile defense systems could eventually spread into the new NATO states in eastern Europe further eroding his ability to flex military muscle when coercing his neighbors.

To be fair to the Russians we have made several provocative moves towards them since the end of the cold war. We expanded NATO (which is pretty much an explicitly Anti-Russian alliance) right to his country's borders. We abrogated the ABM treaty, and it looks like we're trying to scrap INF as well. We have not been a particularly good new friend to Russia and so I understand some animosity.

That being said, Putin needs to (actually I'm pretty sure he has) come to the realization that Russia just isn't one of the big boys anymore. If you used to be a world crushing colossus that struck fear into the entire Eurasian landmass... and now you can't seem to keep individual provinces in your country from kicking your as$ you have to expect to lose some respect on the world stage, and some influence along with it. I think Putin is just trying to salve the ego of his country as they continue their political slide into a 3rd world status that will match their 3rd world economy.

The US did more than that. Wall street sucked hundreds of billions of dollars out of Russia through shady deals with the Oligarchs and the like until Putin began to put a stop the hemorrage. The plan for Iraq was along the same lines.
