Ever had one? I have one now, and it's right above my eye tooth so whenever I talk or try to sip, eat, or anything for that matter that involves moving my mouth the eye tooth goes into the cold sore stabbing it leaving me with some gruesome pain. I can't stand it. What can I do to make it go away? I need it to go away and FAST!

Cold sores suck. Haven't had them for some time (lucky me). However, I remember when I was at the pharmacists' window one day there was a product claiming to actually speed up the recovery process (orajel and those others don't). It was a bit expensive, but it might be worth it if it actually works.

Herpes simplex is commonly referred to as cold sores or fever blisters. It is a viral infection of the skin that may occur once or return again throughout ones life. After recovery from primary HSV infection, virus is not cleared from the body but, rather, it lies dormant (latent) in a non-replicating state, in the sensory nervous system. Periodically, latency reactivates, allowing virus to return to skin or mucous membranes, where it may cause a recurrent infection.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Cold sores are a manifestation of recurrent herpes simplex virus infection around the mouth. The commonest site is on the lips but some people get cold sores on other parts of the face such as around the nostrils.

Y'all got Herpes!:disgust:

I've had these cold sores when I was younger. I don't think I've contracted Herpes. And I only lost my virginity last year. I'm pretty sure I don't have herpes.

Also forgot to add that I bit my lip and thats why it turned into a cold sore. I didn't just appear.

There are two kinds of herpes virus, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 virus causes 60% of the cold sores so common on the lips and face. The other 40% of cases are caused by type 2

Y'all have type 1 HERPES! :disgust:

Is this on the inside or outside of your mouth? If its on the inside its more likely a canker sore and not a cold sore. Canker sores are not caused by herpes.

I have a really serious question -- I read that even though it is a different type of herpes (??) if one performs oral to xxx contact, it could create genital herpes. Is that true (seriously!!!!) ????:disgust:

Cold sores suck. They come and go but the virus is within you forever. General run down condition and/or stress will bring them on. Around finals time is always a goodie, stress + lack of sleep.

Just treat yourself well and ingest some extra vitamin C & some l-lysine, in fact you can grind up some l-lysine and apply it right to the sore to hasten the healing. Seemed to work for me.

<< I bit my lip and that's how this canker sore came about. >>

Oh well that's something different I guess. I can always feel the cold sore like a hot pulsating spot on my lip just before it arrives.

Then it is a canker sore and not a cold sore, and isn't caused by herpes, it was caused by you biting your lip. They are also called mouth ulcers. This site has a lot of good info on them. From the site about the difference between canker and cold sores:

<< Often, canker sores ( mouth ulcers ) are confused with fever blisters (cold sores). While fever blisters and canker sores share several features in common (such as the fact that both are very common, often recurrent, and can be very painful), there are important differences:

Canker Sores ( Mouth Ulcers ) :

Are strictly intraoral meaning that canker sores occur only within the mouth.
Are not contagious meaning they can not be spread from person to person.
Are not caused by a virus.
Fever Blisters ( Cold Sores ), on the other hand:

Are preceded by small blisters called vesicles.
Usually occur on the outside of the mouth although they sometimes occur on the inside of the mouth. When they do occur on the inside of the mouth, fever blisters appear on bound (non-movable) sections of the mouth such as the mouth roof.
Are contagious meaning they can be spread from person to person.
Are caused by a virus.

The only time I ever get canker sores is when I go on a mass chocolate binge for a few days. And it's only on the inside of my mouth, but damn if you bite it accidently while you're chewing food it's painful.

Painful solution, but it works: dab a little bit of salt directly ONTO the sore at least once/day until the sore is gone (damp q-tip dipped in salt usually works). It'll burn like fire, make you wonder if suffering the canker sore for a few more days isn't better, but it WILL make the sore go away faster (basically by drying it out). I would guess that using a warm salt-water rinse in your mouth several times a day would have the same effect.

I used to get canker/cold sores fairly often, but an antiviral dental paste prescribed by my dentist really helped heal them faster and now I don't get any/nearly as much (yes, I know canker sores are non-viral, but I don't recall most of the classic symptoms of cold sores and all of myne were inside the mouth). Probably something to ask about for those of us who are plagued (no pun intended ;p)

Here's another home remedy:

DISCLAIMER: This hurts like crazy and tastes awful.

There is a substance in your grocery store called ALUM (its in the spice section - used for pickling). Dab some of this on the sore (as much as you can stand). It will really burn for about a minute, but then the pain goes away entirely. My Mom always put this on my cold sores and it works great - sometimes it can take the pain out of a sore in only one application. But I gotta warn you again - it really burns.

Contact does not have to be sexual to contract herpes, pretty much any kind of contact can do it, many kids do end up contracting it.

Unfortunately, this is VERY true. Not to mention, if you simply touch the sore, then touch yourself or another, you may potentially transfer the herpes to their genitals. It's not HSV-2, but it's genital HSV-1.

Cold sores suck. I only got one when I was VERY stressed. They manifest themselves when your immune response is low, and that's why they're called "fever blisters", because when your immune system is busy with the illness causing the fever, the HSV-1 has the chance to flourish.

I've heard that anywhere from 60%-90% of people have HSV-1, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. JUST DON'T TOUCH IT! If you touch it, WASH YOUR HANDS!! If you're touching your herpes manifestation (hehe), then you touch the flusher in the bathroom, the next person coming by that touches that same flusher w/o washing their hands may innoculate themselves if they don't already have it (which again, is very rare).

Btw, the best stuff in the world for cold sores, imo, is Abreva. Expensive, but it works. If you use it before the cold sore gets really bad, it'll never show up and you won't have to be embarassed about it :)
