Spoiler:

And WTF was up with those back woods sex sisters that hung out with Giovanni Ribsi? I never really understood them. Were they inbred sex fiends that the confederates paid to snag deserters or what? I'm confused.

Exactly.
This movie just catapulted to tops on my list of movies to watch;)

LOL. One of them is pretty fat. :p

Yeah, its actually not as great as it sounds. You see a few tits, some are worth seeing some are not. Not worth watching the movie for IMO, the scene is pretty short.
LOL, I wasn't being serious!!

the movie was bad. everything that could possibly go wrong, went wrong, and it was too predictable in the end. cliched ending

Of course it was predictable. After all, the story has been around for quite some time, and all of us have read it in one form or another. :p

Yep, isn't it a version of a story in Greek Mythology?

Loosly based on The Odyssey, correct?

She was also the ONLY one in the whole film with a convincing Southern accent. Nicole Kidman was gorgeous to look at but every time she opened her mouth it totally destroyed the effect. She talked like she was auditioning for "Designing Women".

This probably deserves its own thread (probably get locked though) but my question I'm posing to you guys is:

Natalie Portman with baby or Nicole Kidman?

I can't really get past her permanent lemon-sucking expression - I find her appearance distracting (and no, I wouldn't hit it).

I do want to rent Cold Mountain one of these days, though - I really enjoyed the book.

I wouldn't hit it either, I don't go for her looks at all, but there is no denying her acting ability.

Wow, I didn't even think of that...but the parallels to that story are obvious.

You didn't? It was the first thing that came to mind for me.

The sex trap makes it too obvious to ignore.

While I was watching the movie I placed myself in Jude Law's position. For whatever reason, I didn't buy the love setup in the beginning with Nicole Kidman...that is to say I didn't really understand the strong love he supposedly had for her after talking to her like twice.

I would have had a hard time leaving Natalie Portman all alone with that baby. She probably wouldn't have made it, and she didn't have to let me in to feed me when she hardly had any food herself. I may have stayed with her in Jude Law's shoes...even though I hate the idea of raising some one else's kid.

All I knew about that movie going into it was it had something to do with the civil war and RZ, JL and NK were in it. I assumed Jude Law was going to be banging them both. I also knew RZ wore a hat. Thats all I remember from the preview. No one mentioned I should watch out for the odyssey storyline within.

But in retrospect, its really pretty damn close to the same story. Only I don't think odysseus dies at the end in the odyssey.

Oh, I didn't know it was a retelling of it until I was in the middle of the movie.

 Good movie. I wasn't that interested in the beginning, but when Philip Seymour Hoffman was introduced it started getting better. Zellweger did a great job. So many cameos in the movie.

Yes, "Cold Mountain" contains rare photographic footage of Natalie Portman actually acting.

its actually not so rare...its just that she wound up in the most famous series of movies that happen to be directed by a blithering idiot.

There isn't just ONE 'Southern Accent'. Kidman's character was a high-bred southerner - the 'Designing Women' accent was completely correct for the role she played. OTOH, RZ played a rough mountain woman. VERY different accent. Atlanta, Georgia plantation owner accent is nothing like the Appalachian accent at all.

BTW, if you haven't yet, GET THE SOUNDTRACK FOR THE MOVIE.

The movie was 'meh', it's not one I'd see again, but the SOUNDTRACK. OMFG, it's AWESOME.
