"cold medicine" is useless

I got some Tylenol cold, both day and night (night contains antihistimines). The day didn't do anything, took a night time one almost an hour ago and no change, not even sleepy. wtf? Why can't I ever find something that works? 🙁

ive been using the tylenon chest cold stuff all week and its working great

zicam cold relief works well too, if your all stuffy

CCC (Coricidin Cough and Cold)

I abused it for years, but it really does work super for colds. I've also used the high-blood pressure and flu ones, they work for colds, too 😀

Nyquil is your friend.

Contains the same amount of nasal decongestant as the tylenol pills.

yeah but it sure has a lot of fvking alcohol....

with enough of it not only do I forget who I am or that I cannot fly, but my symptoms seems to rub themselves out

Yeah but it knocks you on your butt.

It used to. Then they changed the recipe somehow because kids were buying it to try and get a buzz. Barely works at all now.

I think they still sell the good stuff, but you have to go to the pharmacist.

Perhaps I'll need to revisit the nyquil and just take a larger dose, the normal dose did nothing last time.

IIRC from having read the label after drinking the whole bottle the serving is "1"

400mg of Ibuprofen + 30mg pseudoephedrine works well enough for me. I'm still tired, but at least I have less of a pounding headache and a slightly less runny nose.

Mine says 30ml for an adult, it's a 177ml container. This one doesn't appear to have any alcohol either.

oh well, the only way you'll really feel better faster is to just drink a lot of water, I'm just disappointed that nothing works in the interim.

They aren't entirely useless... it's just that you really can't do anything for a viral infection except help your body battle the side effects.

3 out of 5 times, people buy the wrong cold medicines. I thought the same thing just last week, did my research (I was a little bored) found exactly what active ingredients I needed for my symptoms and although I wasn't really better any faster, most of my symptoms were barely noticable.

A lot of cold medicines contain "Acetaminphen"(sp) and a lot of the research I've done seems to indicate that although it is the primary active ingredient in most medicines, it's no better than aspirin... it's even debated whether it holds any real value in battling the "common cold."

A lot of cough syrups act as both an Expectorant and Supressant... which means it's supposed to help your lungs remove mucus when you cough... but make you cough less. Am I missing something here? They say it's supposed to make you cough less but move more out when you do, but I don't get why you wouldn't just want to get it out ASAP.

I dunno. You may feel differently, but it's wise to know what you are putting in your body before you just buy whatever box makes the best claims.

Your best bet is to eat healthier and get some rest. As always, lots of water. Orange Juice always seems to help, too... if anything it tastes great. 🙂 Aside from that, don't do your cold medicine research while standing in front of all the boxes and bottles in the store.
