I get the impression that Trump supporters have to do this sort of mental purge every time this admin does something that results in cognitive dissonance (I think Donald Trump is the bestest and I am a staunch supporter of free speech and draining the swamp)!
Frankly I think everyone does it on one level or another (Obama drone striking a US Citizen definitely had folks in pretzels for a bit until everyone settled on "well... the dude was a terrorist shitrag") but Trump is so unprincipled that we just see it on a far regular basis with MAGA.
Trump goes and does something that causes those ideas to slam into each other like tectonic plates and we've are blessed to see what would otherwise be internal dialogues, excuses, justifications of the "Free Speech and Anti-Corruption" plates being subducted by the "I love Trump" plate.

Colbert calls Paramount out for making a $16 million dollar bribe to Trump. Paramount cancels his show. But at the same time, the entire company has been making bad business decisions for years.
The Maga base seems to be saying that it’s fair game for a President to silence their critics because those critics “made it political” by attacking the President. They seem quite hostile to the concept of free speech.
It’s also pretty ridiculous to think you have to be a “shill for the Democratic party” to attack Trump. He garners more criticism through his stupidity, cognitive decline, actions and words than any President we’ve ever seen in our lifetime. To not talk about him on a show about daily events would have to be a deliberate decision because he makes himself the dominant piece of news almost every fucking day. He invents things for distraction and purposely wants his bullshit in the front and center of the cameras and mics.
Not much matters to the networks anymore except the amount of advertising revenues a program brings in. And the demographics of the viewers matter to the advertisers. Turning the time over to affiliates is diametrically opposed to growing their bottom line. But - Fuck network television! I haven't watch network tv (other than sports) in years - unless I have to for breaking stories/emergencies.

Well, yes, cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling, and it's much easier to run away from it than it is to confront it and break it down and analyze it. Couple that with conservatives tending to be more governed by fear, and this is what we get. This is part of why you regularly see Greenman running away from conversations that make him think about stuff that's difficult to rationalize.

Maybe Paramount needs new executives who can figure out how to appropriately monetize a number one rated show.
That could well be the case. I have no idea how much revenue a show with two and a half million viewers is expected to produce. The negative part of the equation (40 million) amounts to around $16 per viewer per season. That seems like a lot to me, but I have absolutely no information to base that on. It could be perfectly reasonable for Paramount to up prices by $16 per viewer.

I don't even see the point in this discussion. Nobody can see CBS's books so there's no way to know but what we do know is there is no way in hell they would ever admit to being blackmailed into canceling a show.

If CBS canned Colbert to appease Trump they made a terrible mistake. They should have gone public with the demand.
I'll also note that if Colbert is a money maker some other network will hire him. A known and popular personality is a valuable commodity in the entertainment industry.
