WILMINGTON, Del., April 21 (Reuters) - A shareholder who
accused Coca-Cola Co. KO of violating human rights in
Colombia was shoved to the ground and forcibly removed from the
company's annual meeting on Wednesday as Coke Chairman and
Chief Executive Doug Daft pleaded for restraint.
Ray Rogers, who had been shouting and swearing at Daft
during a shareholder question period, was set upon by several
security officers after he refused to move away from an
audience microphone.
"Security people, please stand down," a concerned Daft said
as the security officers zealously wrestled Rogers to the floor
in front of several hundred stunned shareholders at the Hotel
du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware.
Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, who was at the meeting,
later told the crowd that the force used on Rogers looked
excessive. Rogers, who shoved at least one security officer
during the fracas, was unharmed and not arrested.
A group of U.S. and Colombian labor activists have accused
Atlanta-based Coca-Cola and its Colombian bottlers of hiring
right-wing death squads to intimidate union activists at
bottling plants in the South American country.
More than half a dozen activists who worked at Coke
bottling plants in Colombia have been murdered since 1989,
according to SINALTRAINAL, a Colombian union that has sued
Coca-Cola, its Colombian bottlers and others in U.S. courts.
Coca-Cola has consistently denied allegations of abuse and
said it believed its bottlers were not involved in atrocities
in Colombia.
"The charges linking our company to Colombia are false and
they are outrageous," Daft said on Wednesday.
