i think it was based on the taste

Coke II was New Coke from the 80's. When everyone switched back to Coca Cola "Classic", a few bottlers found that there was still a lot of demand for the New Coke. So they packaged it as Coke II. I don't think any of the bottlers make it anymore. I thought I heard that a couple in Illinois did up until a few years ago.

it tasted exactly like pepsi to me

it seemed that the coke strategy was to just make pepsi and put it into a coke II can. coke fans revolted and they had to ditch it and bring back real coke/coke classic

If anyone was interested in what was different, Coke wanted to save money on materials and test the market to see how they'd like their cheaper formula. Instead of expensive sugar, Coke II used corn syrup. They didn't want to jeopardize their "Coca Cola" brand, so they made a new brand called "Coke II" and tried it out. People hated it so Coke pulled it from the market and re-marketed the original formula as "Coca Cola Classic"

Coca-Cola Classic contained high fructose corn syrup before New Coke existed. New Coke is basically Diet Coke sweetened with high fructose corn syrup instead of aspartame, had different amounts of lemon/orange oil, and used vanillin instead of vanilla.

Y ou do realize that having divulged the secret Coke formula you have been marked for death, right?

One of the best marketing blunders of all time. They asked the wrong questions in focus groups.

What Coke asked: Do you like New Coke?
What the FG said: Oh yeah!
What Coke did: Pulled Coke Classic to sell New Coke.
What the market did: Got pissed off and demanded Coke Classic.

What Coke asked: Do you like New Coke?
What Coke should have also asked: Do you like it enough for us to pull Coke Classic from the shelves?

I watched a documentary on this a few years ago, funny how all the press at the launch were saying stuff like "WTF is up with changing Coke? It tastes like Pepsi?!". The two senior Coke guys had to leave the stage cos they couldn't handle it.

The ingredients are marked on the can in the order of their content, greatest to least which is common information, but I do not know the exact quantities of course.
