It goes unchallenged that the Simpsons has been declining in quality the past few years. Coincidentally or not, I've noticed a liberal slant to some of the humor.
Last week's episode included two mean-spirited and unfunny jabs aimed at Christians. When Maggie scored exceptionally high on her IQ test, a lady blurts out something to the effect of..."that's pretty good for a Christian." Later, while Lisa is praying to God for assistance, Marge threatens God with not hepling out the church bake sale and then tells Lisa it's the "only way to deal with a bully."
Neither joke had anything to do with the plot line. Neither was funny in anything other than a cruel intentioned way. Would it have been equally funny had the lady said "that's pretty good for a Buddhist" or "Mexican"?
I've always found the Christian jokes on the Simpsons in the past to be good-natured and relevent and humorous. But what I saw last week brought to mind the reference to FoxNews in one Simpsons episode as the network for evil. I just don't remember these kinds of spiteful jokes being made when the Simpsons was actually funny. I do recall very slight right leaning messages to many of those classic great episodes.
So, are the liberal minds in charge of coming up with new Simpsons episodes incapable of the intellect required to formulate the subtle and sophisticated humor evident in the Simpsons in it's prime or is this merely coincidence? I tend to think, given how preordained everything in a cartoon has to be, that there really can't be any coincidence, but you never know.
