Coincidence? AT&T DSL signal (kinda long)

Have had AT&T DSL for over 6 months now...did self-install, with a Zoom 5510B USB modem first, then a DLink 2320B. The DLink was rock-solid for over a month, then it seemed I had to switch back and forth between the modems to maintain connection. More recently, the DLink hasn't been able to connect at all, and the Zoom was spotty at best. I picked up a Motorola 2210 ("AT&T approved") modem, it can't even connect. This past weekend, pretty much all my modems were useless. Cleaned connections outside the house, bypassed the house wiring...time to call AT&T. Spent some time on the phone with them tonight, they seemed to agree that it was probably an 'outside' problem, and scheduled a network tech to come out tomorrow. Decided to try the Zoom again (connected for about 2 minutes this AM, not since), and Lo, internet! Just for grins, hooked up the 2210...still nothing. Tried the DLink, and it hooked right up! Hasn't worked this well for MONTHS...interesting. The AT&T guy said they would charge me like $60 if the tech comes out and finds the DSL signal OK. I'm finding it oddly coincidental that since calling it in I suddenly have enough signal for my DLink to lock on...but they couldn't have done anything on their end, could they?

If someone was working on the line on another job they could have done something to clean up your signal. How has the weather been? Water in the terminations can affect your signal all along the way from the Central Office (CO) to your home.

As far as I know, no (they checked for outages when I was on the phone, didn't mention anything about ongoing local repairs). Weather's been rainy for a while, but this started before the rainy season. I don't have one of those nice weatherproof NIDs outside, just a crappy open-back box with a crusty terminal block in it. Maybe I'll ask for the new NID while he's here.

Modem won't let me log in, can't check the logs, but seems like it's been working all night. Figures....this is easily the longest stretch that this modem's been able to stay connected in several months, and only right after I finally call and complain. It's magic! Either that, or they were able to do something back at the CO, and just want to charge me for sending out the tech >:-/
