Coil whine only through headphones

When I put my headphones on, I get awful coil whine from my video card. In fact, it seems to be getting worse lately. However when I play sound through my speakers there's no coil whine to speak of. Shouldn't I be hearing the buzzing regardless of my sound source, since any sound has to go through my motherboard's onboard sound? Do I need to RMA my video card?

The whine only comes through when I use the case's port. When I plug directly into the motherboard (as my speakers are) I don't hear coil whine through my headphones. The case's audio port is connected to the motherboard though. I don't understand why I only get coil whine when I plug in through my case.

unshielded cabling will do that. It's poor quality cable running to your front case connector. Really, the only fix, is to either replace ( if possible ) with shielded cable, or simply run an extension from the rear mb connectors to your headphones.

Do you hear the coil whine from the headphones or the video card? You've said both in 2 posts. Some case have poor grounding on their usb/headphone ports which create noise on headphones/speakers, maybe that could be a source of your problem.

The coil whine is coming from the video card, not the headphones. I suppose I'll invest in an extension to run from the back of the case. Thanks for the help.
