Coil whine on a GPU?

I'm 100% positive it's coming from the GPU. I've ran a CPU stress test and no whine. I booted up a game, turned all the fans on low, got real close to the GPU and heard it whining. Is this normal wear and tear, or a sign of it dying?

I've owned it for 2-3yrs. Never overclocked it but gamed on it. It's my GTX 670 in my game rig.
 
What is the framerate when you hear the whine?

I've noticed whine when the FPS is up close to 200 or higher (loading screens which don't have locked-down FPS), on a few cards, but I don't notice any during regular 60FPS gaming on my 290X Lightnings.

So basically this coil whine might be a normal thing?
 
My old 770 would whine with a high fps in certain games.My Strix 970 does it only if i am like in a menu like in lets say the original Crysis and there is like 700fps or something but its barely audible while the 770 whined pretty good but funny enough the higher the fps the louder the whine lol while the 970 in menus is pretty consistent.

Oddly enough Crysis with low frames would cause a whine on that 770 but any other game it just wouldn't happen till we got like into the 150+ fps range lol.
 
I think it depends on the components used during production. Guess age could play a factor also. A lot of them will whine during high fps in menus as others have stated. My reference design 970 doesn't seem to whine at all from what I can tell. I've seen some very high fps in menus at times....Talking like 1000's plus if I remember correctly.
 
Coil whine is unfortunately normal. I have cards all the way back from the AGP days (GeForce 6800 GT) when they first started including "big" voltage regulation circuitry that coil whine but still work fine.

Ok. Cool. This is something new to me with a GPU. I know when my run IBT or Prime 95 with my rig at 4.5GHz it (the MB) will wine very very faintly, but the GPU is instantly noticeable.

Again though, did this just start recently? Do you feel you just noticed it? Or did you finally just reach a point where you wanted to find out what we thought?

If you feel confident it never happened under any circumstances prior to recently, I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer of the GPU. If it was fine and just recently started exhibiting coil whine, that can be an early indicator of failure. If it always did it in certain circumstances, it's just likely the nature of those specific components. Sometimes the way they get packaged together, they have resonant frequencies that we can hear.

I can't say when it started I'm only saying that I recently noticed it. I may have before and just forgot but it may be progressing and that's why I took notice to it maybe again. I do have my case open for cooling purposes.

I'm definitely gonna have to keep a closer eye/ear on it. It's an EVGA. I know one has to register the product for the warranty. I can't remember if I did or not but here's hoping.. I might stop by the forums and log in to my account,,, they usually have the things that were registered for warranty purposes under the account.

Actually, you do not have to register it for warranty. All the manufacturers just say that, but IIRC, there was some law or something that basically made that illegal. It may have been a California-only thing or something, and I may be completely off the mark, but I've heard that basically everywhere accepts warranty claims without registration.
