So I was listening to Sirius this past weekend, and a song came on that immediately grabbed my attention...the name of the song was "Welcome Home," and the band's name, Coheed and Cambria.

I listen to a lot of progressive rock...mostly stuff from the 1970s...Led Zeppelin, Yes, Queen and Rush...all the staple progressive rock bands...and those bands that have kept the candle burning for, what I consider to be, artistically unique or genuine hard rock...bands like Dream Theater, Kings X, Faith No More, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Lacuna Coil, Symphony X, Nine Inch Nails, Jellyfish...and even some harder bands like Metallica, Slipknot, System of a Down, Type O Negative, Rammstein, Alice in Chains, Black Label Society...most of the stuff I listen to is definitely not top 40.

Back to Coheed and Cambria...the lead singer immediately reminded me of Geddy Lee of Rush, and the song arrangement of "Welcome Home" definitely gave me a Kashmir vibe...my first reaction was that perhaps this band was a progressive rock offering I had yet to discover...the dueling guitars, choral arrangements, lyrics and general feel of the song was definitely to my liking.

So I went to their website, and listened to some song samples from their current two albums...apparently the song "Welcome Home" will be available on their yet to be released new album.

Their old stuff...well I am confused...they seemed to get some favorable airplay on MTV with their single "A Favor House Atlantic," and I can understand why, as the vibe I got from that song falls quite comfortably into the bubblegum rock, whining EMO and Hot Topic punk crap that is all the rage these days on MTV...the distinction between "A Favor House Atlantic" and "Welcome Home" is different enough to the extent that it would seem that different bands sang and wrote each song.

So what's the deal...did they switch record producers, or perhaps are moving in a direction away from Total Request Live...or is "Welcome Home" a fluke for what is otherwise a crappy band?

I was listening to sirius as well and Madison said this song sounded like Rush. Me, never having listened to Rush, was not sure. This thread confirms she was right...

The first thing I thought when I heard the song was that it was Rush...too bad, because Rush hasn't put out anything to rival their harder, earlier offerings in some time.

I have seen Rush live on three occasions, and even Geddy Lee's high pitched voice can become grating after an hour or so, but not before they play "Tom Sawyer"

I'm not a huge Coheed fan, but I like some of their songs. The first thing I said when I heard their new single, "Woah, it's Rush". I absoloutely love the song... and what's super weird is that I'm listening to it right now. Definately better than some of their old stuff that made them popular.

yeah, the Rush comparison always comes up, with good reason...and they've gone through some different stages in musical styles.

Not nearly as annoying as a lot of their other stuff. If the whole cd is like that I might be able to get into it.

I like some of their stuff, the way I understood it is that they have different leads for different types of songs. First time i heard "A Favor House Atlantic" i definately thought it was a girl singing!

The song sounds so much better at 1.4x speed in WMP though it makes the vocal warbling sound really weird.

(yet another whining band that sucks)

QFT. Some friends of mine are really into Coheed and they got me to listen to a couple of songs...Gawd. Emo is the suck. When I was like "whats this Emo bullsh!t coming into my ears!", they got all offended and said, "Its not Emo..." BS. Whiny Emo bands need to quit threatening to off themselves and actually do it for once.

They are a strange act. They are only recording 4 albums EVER, and then quitting forever. They intended on making 4 albums that tell the stories of 2 people, "Coheed" and "Cambria". They recorded the 2nd album of stories FIRST, the 3rd album next, and they're coming out w/ the final album (4th) next, followed by the 1st album last. So it goes 2, 3, 4, 1.

They also make comics to follow the story. I can't really read much into their songs and how it relates, but that's the story. It also explains why their sound is different from album to album, as the story changes, so does the music that accompanies it. Neat idea :)

Sometimes they masquerade as prog rock....but don't be fooled. The Mars Volta, they are not.

Well that's what has me confused...I had never heard any of their music prior to catching their new single on Sirius, and I thought it was a strong progressive rock offering...then I heard some of the stuff that got airplay on MTV, and found it to be similar to all the whining EMO bands out there.

If the new album is in the same vein as "Welcome Home," I'll probably get it...I may pass on their older tunes.
