So I was listening to Sirius this past weekend, and a song came on that immediately grabbed my attention...the name of the song was "Welcome Home," and the band's name, Coheed and Cambria.
I listen to a lot of progressive rock...mostly stuff from the 1970s...Led Zeppelin, Yes, Queen and Rush...all the staple progressive rock bands...and those bands that have kept the candle burning for, what I consider to be, artistically unique or genuine hard rock...bands like Dream Theater, Kings X, Faith No More, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Lacuna Coil, Symphony X, Nine Inch Nails, Jellyfish...and even some harder bands like Metallica, Slipknot, System of a Down, Type O Negative, Rammstein, Alice in Chains, Black Label Society...most of the stuff I listen to is definitely not top 40.
Back to Coheed and Cambria...the lead singer immediately reminded me of Geddy Lee of Rush, and the song arrangement of "Welcome Home" definitely gave me a Kashmir vibe...my first reaction was that perhaps this band was a progressive rock offering I had yet to discover...the dueling guitars, choral arrangements, lyrics and general feel of the song was definitely to my liking.
So I went to their website, and listened to some song samples from their current two albums...apparently the song "Welcome Home" will be available on their yet to be released new album.
Their old stuff...well I am confused...they seemed to get some favorable airplay on MTV with their single "A Favor House Atlantic," and I can understand why, as the vibe I got from that song falls quite comfortably into the bubblegum rock, whining EMO and Hot Topic punk crap that is all the rage these days on MTV...the distinction between "A Favor House Atlantic" and "Welcome Home" is different enough to the extent that it would seem that different bands sang and wrote each song.
So what's the deal...did they switch record producers, or perhaps are moving in a direction away from Total Request Live...or is "Welcome Home" a fluke for what is otherwise a crappy band?
