What ever happenend to packets being able to reroute themselves around a part of the internet that is down.

What does this mean? Will we eventually have 'comcast's internet' 'verizon's internet', etc?

Seems like this should be illegal.

Most dangerous words ever spoken.

This feud is part of business i.e. a natural bump in the free market road. But as long as it continues both companies will lose, and their competition will start picking up the slack.

Why should it be illegal? These companies provide a service, don't like it, cancel the service.

It may already be illegal in a way. If you sign a contract for a service and then the company doesn't provide the full service, it is breaking the contract. You are paying a company money to be able to email anyone, anywhere. If they suddenly cut you off, then they may have violated the contract.

In theory provided each network isnt self contained the routing tables should update themselves over time to reroute packets into the networks. From what I read is both networks were directly linked to each other and when they cut the link people couldnt access the other network. But this should in theory change as the routers search for a new path.

Strange when you read that...the internet fixes itself. Sort of like how people who have strokes or brain damage can rewire their brains over time.

Possibly. In which case you would likely be entitled to monetary compensation.

That was the point behind the TCP\IP model the DoD developed. They wanted the ability for military sites to stay connected even if a few links went down from nuclear attacks.

They built a system smart enough to find another way around the broken link.

Ya'll are not comprehending this. This problem CANNOT reroute itself.

If the link simply went down or was removed, routers would send packets over difference links and things would be alright, but slower, until the main connection reappeared. However, what happened is that Level 3 changed routing entries so that packets sent to Cognent would be dropped. Also, they refused information from Cognent's network. This is something that eventually the Internet could re-route around, but it would take to time to establish new routes and increase bandwidth to handle more traffic.
The internet would only heal itself if all the networks attempted to communicate with each other, if they purposely deny traffic, then there really isn't a lot you can do.
