300-350 lbs I can believe... but 900 lbs?? Just no. No.

You've got that completely backwards. Just about any normal person can become mildly to severely obese by simply eating too much.

Some cannot become obese no matter what they eat.

And then, only a few have the genetics that cause them to become super obese. Genetics that thankfully, most of us do not have.

A 7 year old kid was already 320 lbs and he eats normal food. His BALANCED meals include sandwiches, veges, juice, ... no matter what he eats, he gains weight. It's like that for some people and yes, it is all genetic. The 300-400 lbs people are just have slightly better fat burning ability. Although you can gorge and eat too much and get fat, most obese people are obese due to genetics.

Wrong!!!

Burning more calories than you eat = weight loss

How can you let yourself get that fat... Disgusting...

Very few people can, and it nearly all genetic.

Blaming the super obese for their problems is ignorance. They have a serious genetic abnormality.

If you think it's all sloth, I challenge you to get that big. Bet you couldn't no matter how hard you tried.

They're just lazy. You don't eat crap you don't get fat. Period. You only gain weight if you consume more calories than you burn in any given day. Genetics do play a role, but not enough to make you obese.

Just plain ignorance. Genetics play a HUGE role. Again, I challange ANY normal sized person to become super obese (500 lbs or heavier).

You can't. You know why? Genetics.

It's not laziness alone that causes this. Many super obese people do not eat much more, if any more than normal sized people.

Wrong. You burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. It's not scientifically possible to gain weight if you burn more calories in a day than you consume. Period. Where is the excess weight coming from? Osmosis?

Why do you think Americans are more obese than any other populace? Because they eat too much. Why do you think people in France are so thin? Because they eat small portions. They eat right. It's black and white. Genetics are a non-factor. It's laziness. Plain and simple.

Edit: I shouldn't say genetics are a non-factor, becaue they are, but just because someone's predisposed to gaining weight, certainly does not mean they'll be fat no matter what. A good diet will make ANYONE lose weight, no matter their genetic predisposition. Again, it comes down to laziness.

"Most obese people are obese due to..." laziness. Someone may be predisposed to gaining weight, but if they burn more calories than they consume, they'll lose weight. Just because you're slanted to gain weight due to genetics doesn't mean you're going to be fat no matter what. It's laziness. Plain and simple.

may i remind you all of the 900 club.

interesting quotes in the article:

Garcia "normally eats five meals a day, which include two 32-ounce steaks, a half-gallon of ice cream, a container of cake frosting, a large pepperoni pizza, plus gobs of mashed potatoes, tacos, pork and beans, and eight packages of peanut butter cups."

and this:

"After contracting septicemia in the early 1980s, she spent most of the next decade in bed, eating - as much as 15,000 calories per day. It wasn't unusual for her to put away three large pizzas in 40 minutes (washing them down with diet soda), then ask for dessert."

i suppose those are factual statements. genetic predisposition is a contributor, but i suppose eating heavily also contributes to it in the aforementioned cases.

(by the way, i have no opinion on the matter. i find the 900 club information truly interesting.)

You've got to eat a certain amount just to maintain nutritional needs.. for these people, just eating the bare minimum to survive still means they're going to gain weight. Imagine being on a 1000 calorie diet for 20 years and gaining significant weight.

Sigh...then don't eat 1000 calories if it makes you gain weight. Eat 500 and take some vitamins.

"Thirty-three inches were our biggest back in '90. We thought that was pretty big," Davis said.

"Then we started getting calls for bigger and bigger caskets so I went up to 48 inches. Now I'm making them 52 inches."
Can't explain that with genetics.
