Both coffee and beer are acquired tastes unless like myself you are a genetically predisposed Norwegian. The problem most Americans have with the taste of either coffee or beer is the incredible amount of bad coffee and beer we produce. Bad habits need cultivation otherwise, we are only ambassadors of wretched excess!

I'm fairly sick of hearing that "acquired taste" BS. To me, that pretty much means, "hey, sure it tastes like piss, but just keep drinking it until it doesn't bother you.". 😛

I've tried a ton of the "fancy beers", and they all still taste like crap to me.

I really enjoy a good cup of coffee.
I really really really really enjoy a delicious beer.

I wouldn't want to EVER discontinue consumption of either one.

However, if a decision was required, I would do away with coffee.

One question though,
Does giving up coffee also require giving up coffee flavored stouts?
Cause that's like a double negative, I don't drink a lot of coffee stout, but I do enjoy it every now and again.

Now if the question was:
Give up Folgers or Budweiser, then I could happily do without either of them, but GOOD beer and GOOD coffee are two things that I currently have a lot of appreciation for.

Sorry,
I forgot everyone is born liking the taste of cigarettes, Coke, cows milk and, fries. Why do I get the feeling that the "fancy beers" you've tried are the 'imports' sold at your local convenience store. 🙂

What kind of choice is this? I have to choose which part of the day I want to be functional?? This poll is obviously sponsored by Satan.

No actually. I have a friend who is an exotic beer nut. He also brews a ton of different brews himself. He has a buddy who works at a beverage distributor, and he occasionally has all kinds of exotic beers specially imported.

I'm not saying everyone should hate beer, and I realize there are a zillion different kinds of beer out there, I just hate the whole acquired taste line. If they were all so good, you wouldn't need to "acquire" the taste. When is the last time you heard someone say that milkshakes are an acquired taste? 😉

You user name implies you are more than just a casual beer drinker, and probably brew your own. So, you may be a tad bit biased.

One last thing...WTF was that bit about cigarettes? Who the hell likes the taste of those? I don't think even smokers would say they like the "taste" of their cigarettes...

I meant to imply that all tastes are acquired based on geography, society, economics and heritage.
I do brew my own and am more than a tad biased. 🙂
As an ex smoker I do indeed claim that smokers like the taste of their cigarettes.
As for milkshakes, the vast majority of the world does not like or tolerate cows milk very well.
Just trying to give a little perspective and spread a little sunshine. 🙂

Beer, definitely. While I do drink it, I could always (and would much rather) stick with liquor. Besides, I actually enjoy the taste of coffee, and it serves a productive purpose.

I drink coffee in the morning to help recover from the beer I drank the night before. If I quit drinking beer I wouldn't need the coffee. If I quit drinking coffee I wouldn't be able to drink beer. So it's pretty much all or none rather than either-or for me.

Remember the first time you had spicy food? At first it burned your tongue and had you blowing flames, but after a few times it gets easier, better, and suddenly you just can't have plain, flavorless food anymore.

If you could look at my garage, you'd have the answer to your question. I brewed well over 100 gallons last year, none of it coffee save the small bit which went into the coffee oatmeal stout. 🙂

Marge: I'd like a coffee
Aussie Bartender: Beer it is
Marge: No, coffee
Bartender: Beer
Marge: Cof-fee
Bartender: Be-er
Marge: C-O
Bartender: B-E

😀

I'd do away with beer. As long as I can have my martinis. 😛

I love my Gevalia Signature Blend in the morning. There is nothing more satisfying in the morning IMO.
