Its a $1.85 for a 20oz coffee at starbucks! Not many places sell coffee cheaper than that. I dont understand why everyone says coffee is so expensive at starbucks,

its like 4 bucks, yadda yadda yadda, i could make it at home for less

Stop ordering the expensive crap then complain about the price-frappacinos are not coffee. Regular coffee is not a bad deal there and its only 50 cents for a refill.

and the idiots that are saying coffee isnt good for you because water is better and vegetables have more antioxidants... you all have serious critical thinking issues. Just because another food is better, does not make coffee bad for you.

/coffee snob :p

I also roast my own, but won't turn down gas station garbage in a pinch... so Starbucks is fine too...

Honestly it tastes like someone messed up a batch of good beans.

Their beans do come out burnt, and their brewed coffee is accordingly crappy.

I like their espresso drinks though.

That's a little surprising considering that espresso greatly amplifies the qualities of the beans. If it was burnt, the espresso would be absolutely undrinkable.

have you had their espresso? when i've ordered a bag of their espresso beans, its EASY to see they are overroasted. Maybe southern italians prefer almost black, but I like the idea of northern italians who drop a sugar cube into their espresso, and its not necessarily an almost-black roast either.

i like mine around the Full City roast level, iirc.

Did you read the post quoted? He said their coffee was burnt, yet he liked their espresso; these are almost mutually exclusive.

Also, you can't always easily see that a bean is overroasted. Some beans tend to look lighter/darker at a similar internal temperature, a temperature that induces pyrolisys. A notable example is Monsooned Malabar. A dark MM won't taste overroasted like a dark Brazilian.

Anyway, for the most part I agree, but sight alone isn't sufficient even if the bean is showing oil.

[edit]To answer your question: Yes, I have had their espresso. I've had it on their old La Marzocco machines and I've had it on their superautomatics. Both are insipid as far as I'm concerned, but it's more about technique, cleanliness of the machine (nothing is worse than the taste of an espresso on a machine that has a lot of residue), and freshness of the beans. If you buy the beans directly from the silver bag they're actually relatively fresh, and if you pull a shot from those same beans the quality is astronomically higher than what you get at most stores. The beans are only partly to blame, and it's a small part in this case.[/edit]

Saw on the news the other day that Democrats are more likely to drink coffee from Starbucks and Republicans generally drink coffee at Dunkin' Donuts.

Sorry, by "espresso drinks" I meant mochas, cappuccinos, etc. (mostly mochas).

Their espresso straight up isn't great, though I'd much rather order there than at most places I've been to. The majority of places use stale beans I guess, which is masked alright in drip brewed coffee, but leaves their espresso too bitter. I'll take burned over bitter any day.

Regarding price, I really don't know wtf people are talking about. They may be a little more expensive than some places, but a cup of brewed coffee doesn't cost "$4".

QFT...if you have the right blend, grind, maker, and use nice, cold, clean water, it's serious kick ass coffee!!

Actually coffee is extremely good for you.

Coffee in itself has its negatives and positives.
It's negative is caffeine and assuming you don't drink more than one or two cups, the benefits of coffee far outweigh the negatives.

caffeine isnt bad for you

I love all the starbucks haters here. They're bandwagon people just like the people who hate Walmart, SUV's, and American cars. Anyways, I drink Starbucks plain coffee about once a week, and some of their fancier drinks maybe a couple times a month. There's nothing wrong with Starbucks. Why do people feel the need to act superior to those who like it?

last week I was in Hong Kong for work and there was a Starbucks on the ground floor of our office building there. let me tell you it is very dangerous to have a SB an elevator ride away. I was down there 2 or 3 times a day.

bingo! but they say that nothing inside of that animal actually gets to the inner bean as the acids arent strong enough to get rid of the shell

Are you joking?

I have found that a Caramel HighRise on Ice from Carabou Coffee is even better than a Caramel Machiatto on Ice from Starbucks. More shots, less acidic brew.

i like starbucks the best out of almost every coffee i've ever tried. even most of the whole foods organic coffee isn't as good as starbucks.

and when you factor in the size of the cup, the better quality and the fact they use something like twice as much coffee as most mom and pops or other places it's about the same price
