I also roast my own, but won't turn down gas station garbage in a pinch... so Starbucks is fine too...

Honestly it tastes like someone messed up a batch of good beans.

I like Starbucks if it's the weekend and I've time. Weekdays I prefer Dunkin Donut coffee.

Their beans do come out burnt, and their brewed coffee is accordingly crappy.

I like their espresso drinks though.

Free coffee from college dining halls taken black at 7am = hi engineering.

That said, as far as coffee trends go, Caribou > Starbucks. But only because I like how their iced coffee tastes better.

It's a nice way to start off a day, not necessarily starbucks

Are you joking?

Star Bucks isnt anythign special. People go there and pay a premium becaus eof the setting it is in. This is right out of the execs mouths from one of their conference calls. They are not in teh businees of selling you coffee. They are in the business of selling you an experience.

Ah, so that explains why the coffee tastes like burnt ass.

I love coffee, but I only go to Starbucks every once and awhile. It's good coffee, but I think Dunkin Donuts has better coffee. Plus the work coffee here is pretty damn good, so it keeps me happy.

The people who complain about Starbucks are usually just doing it out of arrogance. Their coffee prices are on par with every other major coffee selling establishment (not talking about specialty drinks, which are not overpriced either), and in my opinion, the taste is much better. I am a frequent Starbucks drinker, and find coffee from McDonalds to be bland, tasteless, and undrinkable.

And yes, the atmosphere is much nicer than most places... I don't understand why that is a negative. It's like saying the food at Arby's is better than a sit down restaurant because it is cheaper and dirty.

Are you finacially weathly? That's the only way I can see wasting any disposable income on overpriced coffee.

Frikken sweet.

Also, I'm 24, so although I'm not a 16 year old I suppose I qualify for the age that I should be moronic and shell out way too much money for starbucks burnt mess. I don't. There is better available coffee out there that goes to a local business if you aren't roasting yourself, and they have fair trade coffee all day everyday.

I'd like to start roasting my own beans but haven't sat down and done the research and aquisition to do so. I'll probably try to do it on the cheap, I remember last time I looked into it that old popcorn poppers work well for it.

That's a little surprising considering that espresso greatly amplifies the qualities of the beans. If it was burnt, the espresso would be absolutely undrinkable.

Slightly off topic... Do you have any suggestions for good web sites/forums to read up on home roasting? I just bought myself a roaster (this one) but have been hesitant to use it.

I go to Starbucks a lot, but I wouldn't go there to just get a regular cup of coffee. For plain old coffee, I actually prefer Dunkin Donuts- I don't tend to think that Starbucks' brewed coffee is anything special. But they do have good blended drinks and flavored coffee drinks which are a treat and I'm willing to shell out an extra couple of bucks for them.

Unless you order something complicated, regular cofee is like $1.60 at Starbucks and about that most other chains. A $1.60 is nothing in this city when compared to everything else.

It has become fashonable to hate on Starbucks these days but I don't give a sh!t. I'f I'm walking down the street in the mood for coffee and don't happen to have stuffed my drip machine in my pocket when I left the house, I'm going to stop and get some.

CoffeeGeek is the best resource. They have a forum for roasting.

If you really want to understand the fundamentals and history of roasting, I'd have to recommend Kenneth Davids' book. He also has a site called Coffee Review where he, not surprisingly, reviews various coffees from roasters around the world.

Enjoy the FreshRoast!

have you had their espresso? when i've ordered a bag of their espresso beans, its EASY to see they are overroasted. Maybe southern italians prefer almost black, but I like the idea of northern italians who drop a sugar cube into their espresso, and its not necessarily an almost-black roast either.

i like mine around the Full City roast level, iirc.
