I have a laptop and i can't access the wireless lan in the side of the lunch room that i sit at for schoolage. I read this coffee can thing but was wondering what plug i need for my NIC like which pig tail to buy.

http://www.cablexperts.com/cfdocs/c...&USA_ship=1&c=0

they have the best prices that i have seen for high quality pigtails but i don't know wich one to get. I have the Dell Truemobile 1150 card made by lucent tech. in my gateway laptop. that website sells:

Cisco, (Aironet/Dell), Truemobile & Proxim PC Card Cable Assemblies
and
Orinoco/Lucent WiLAN Style Cable Assemblies

the first one uses MMCX Male Right Angle and the second one uses M/C Card, Right Angle plug. does anyone know what kind i need for my nic?

incase you are trying to figure out what i am building here is a pic with description

Looking at this, I'd day you need a MMCX, but you can shoot them an email, and find out for sure.

The card you have is a repackaged orinoco card and a MMCX pig tail is what you need, I would advise you to pony up the cash for a real omni-antenna, instead of a home made directional, since unless you want to bring a tripod and know exactly where to aim the can, you are not going to have much luck. They make nice antenna's that mount on the back of your lappy screen that would better suit your situation, but being a fellow cash straped student I understand where you are comming from. Good luck. Just my .02

Ok well how much money are we talking about for this antenna that attaches to the back of my screen. Would I be better off spending like 13 bucks for the pigtail making my own until i get the cash to get a real one and what sort of distance can a real one have? I am new with this wireless stuff.

I was just thinking that i should get M/C pigtail b/c this page from that site you sent me a link of. See it says for antenna link same as Orinoco and lucent/Orinoco gold card uses MC antenna jack... Please correct me if i am wrong or if the site is wrong i don't want to buy the wrong pigtail :(

I'd email them at the site I linked for you above: It looks like they specialize in this stuff, and you can tell them what it is you want to do. link

Yea, I think atleast buying the pig tail is a good idea, since it will let you easily hook up to a home made antenna or most retail antenna's that you might buy down the road.

ok thanks for all the great advice guys. I'll e-mail the company and find out what pigtail is right for my card and what the difference is between the two cable types they offer and then buy the one they recommend. and since i have a coffee can laying around i might aswell try making my own. :)
