The center channel of my Logitech Z-680s died, so Logitech had me send back my control pod for which they sent me an entire new set of speakers. Big points for customer support, small points for inventory management. It occurred to me that if I had another control pod my old speakers would function perfectly well as a 4.1 system, so I called Logitech and asked if I could buy a control pod for the price of a 4.1 speaker system (since they basically gave me a whole new system sans control pod for free). They said since the pod is for the 680s, I would have to pay the price of the 680s. I thanked them for their time and figured like others, I'm stuck with 5.1 extra speakers.
Now I'm wondering if a computer can be made to function as the controller. The interface between the control pod and the subwoofer is the same 15-pin connector that's used for gameports, such as the one included on many soundcards. I would bet that a knowledgeable coder could take a female-female gameport adapter, plug a control pod into the gameport, and record the signals put out by each function of the control pod. Then all that would need to be done is to make a software interface to replicate those signals, and also route the sound signal through the gameport.
If anyone here is up for such a project, let me know. I'm willing to compensate. Also I don't know where else to post this request, so if anyone knows of other forums or mailing lists where this would generate interest then please forward it.
