you need an mpeg 2 codec to watch dvds. but your system probably already has one, if you've ever installed a dvd program like cyberlink powerdvd

There was one codec I see alot of people using, I just can't remember the name......

Use VLC, as it has it's own built in codecs. Will play almost all video types, except for certain newer ones like VP7 or rarer codecs.

get klite (mega) codec pack and be a winnar

I have tried those, can I install them into WMP, or do I need to use the player it comes with (oldschool WMP)

codec and player are independent, the codec pack comes with media player classic, but if you play the videos on WMP10, its still fine. as long as you have the codecs it will play.

I use Nimo, but since it's no longer updated, you have to make sure you get the newer codecs. Also, be sure yo udon't isntall too many codecs/filters you don't need, as your videos might look messed up during palyback (green screen, upside down, etc.). Stick with the K-Lite codec pack, and make sure to visit Divx.com and Xvid.org once a month, as they are releasing new versions soon.

..I installed power dvd6 and the video works but no audio🙁 I then installed windvd just to see what happens and everything works!!..I know I'm not the only one that experiences this..but wit a fullfresh clean install of xp pro sp2 how does this happen..why do the codecs get lost??

igbt, did you try power dvd settings and play with the audio / speaker selection?
make sure you dont do 6.1 digital surround or whatever if you have a 2 speaker setup, etc.

check that out

I had a video that would not play in WMP10, but it would in the Classic that came with K-Lite

See...it just happened again. I installed the k-lite codec pack without Classic media player and it won't play the vid....says can't find codecs. I re-installed Classic media player and it plays just fine in that. It's a Top Gear episode.
