i have a .MOV file I cannot play... The only thing I can find out about it is that it is MPEG-4 format... but none of my players tell me what codec I need to view it. How can I find out? I tried opening the movie in a hex editor to see if it might have the codec in the header somewhere but unless its encoded in something other than ascii then I can't tell. Can you recommend a MOV player that has alot of obscure codecs or perhaps a way of finding out what codec I need to download? So far I've tried Quick Time and Windows Media PLayer and some player that came with divx 5.02

.MOV is Quicktime; that should have been able to play it. Are you using the latest version from Apple's site? I think it's up to verson 6 now.
If it is in fact MPEG4, and was just labeled wrong, go here and download the codec pack for your version of Media Player; maybe that will do it.

try Quicktime 6 or it is compressed with MPEG-4 and exported to a MOV...

if u got Adobe premiere try opening the clip with it (with MPEG-4 codec and Quicktime installed in your system )

Did you try the latest version of Quicktime? The new codecs used for .mov are MP4 compliant I think, and it wasn't in the previous version...
