What do those here that have experience think of this ? I signed up and received an invite. I don't really know what to think about this .... if true then I might go for it as after 25 years of labor / truck driving my back is gone.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A new program launching Thursday intends to set up thousands of Oregonians with a free coding education and potential job in the state’s technology sector.

Code Oregon, a product of online learning platform Treehouse and workforce investment board Worksystems, will soon offer the free service to 10,000 residents of Multnomah and Washington counties, all in an effort to better equip them with an in-demand skill set.

The partnership will work like this: the 10,000 selected to take part in Code Oregon will be taught OS, Android, HTML, CSS, WordPress, PHP, Python, JavaScript and Ruby. Worksystems will then assist the program’s graduates with leading tech jobs in the area.

And according to the Treehouse team, Portland is ripe for the picking, with more than 700 technology jobs currently open in the metro. Most of the jobs start at $45,000-$70,000 with no degree necessary.

“Initiatives like Code Oregon help people find high-paying, rewarding jobs more quickly,” said Ryan Carson, co-founder and CEO of Treehouse. “We want to start the Code-to-Work movement, which will take someone from no experience, to job-ready, to a rewarding career – all without a degree and zero experience. The rules are all changing. You just don’t need a Computer Science degree any more to get an amazing job in the tech industry.”

It's a good initiative for those who don't have a background in CS and want to get involved in the tech industry, but to truly stand out above the rest, you really need some knowledge in CS.

Most can get by without knowing anything about CS for HTML and CSS, but PHP, Python, JS, and Obj-C require a little more background to implement the application efficiently and properly...

Thanks for the reply. Should I take this course then learn CS ? Learn CS while taking said course ? Wondering if Tech company's if hiring people from this class would then invest in further training like CS you mentioned.

Computer Science is usually a multiple-year commitment.

But do do a good job teaching all those topics, this would be pretty long and involve a fair amount of computer science-ey stuff.

How long is this course? Is it like a 2-year associates degree kind of thing, or a 90 day coding boot camp?

I haven't read up enough yet to know how long this course is. I signed up upon learning about this offer ... but was accepted so quick I thought it might be a scam ..

Just remember the sunk cost fallacy and you'll be fine even if it IS a scam.
