hey all. i currently have a evga 8600GTS with the latest drivers installed and whenever i play COD4 for about 30 min. it lags a bit. like i will be running and all the sudden the video would freeze and the sound will keep going but i cant move and the screen is stuck. after about 30 seconds the screen will go black and after about 10 seconds the screen will reload and i will be able to play again. anyone know how i can fix this? thanks.

Check if videocard is overheating?

Crysis would do this to me. Wasn't sure if it was GPU overheating or not (was running pretty toasty, but at factory speeds), so quick test was to put my window fan right on the video card. Played Crysis and never had the freezing for 10-15 second problem when the fan was on, so I figure the videocard was overheating. Still need to clean out the heatsink on it with an air compressor, hopefully it'll fix the problem. It never happened in any other games. Worth a try to monitor the temps while playing though, or take the case panel off and put a fan on it as a test.

Sounds a lot like a TDR error also. If you ALT-TAB after the screen blanks, do you see an error Balloon in the Notification Area on the Taskbar (lower right)?

If you do grab #4 here:

Vista Hot Fixes

I'd also get #2 and #5 if you don't have them.

Are those Hot Fixes included in the Windows Updates?

Ive seen that when the shader clock is too high. But that could be caused by it getting too hot.
