COD4 suddenly extremely slow

I just upgraded my video drivers because Steam asked me to. Who knows why; I should know not to listen to that piece of crap software by now. Anyway COD4 (only COD4 nothing else) is now extremely slow, like I'm running about 10, maybe 15 FPS. I updated PB but that didn't help. I also read that deleting your player profile and starting again can help, but I'd really rather not do this, as I've got a whole year of gaming on there, with all the achievments and a good kill ratio. Surely there must be a way to change the profile in an editor rather than regenerating it? Or maybe it's not the profile at all? Anyone experienced anything similar?

1. Your sure AA is not being forced for just COD 4 right? or some setting like that.

2. Have you tried dropping all in game setting to the lowest to see what the result is.

3. Checked your Nvidia control panel for the COD 4 and see if there are any settings that are being applied just for that game?

I've reset everything to default then set 1680*1050 with 4x AA and normal textures - this should give me over 60FPS but it now hovers around 15-18 (measured with FRAPS).

Very little. Maybe gained a frame or two.

I just uninstalled the new drivers, cleaned with Driver Sweeper in safe mode, then installed bleeding edge beta drivers supposedly optimized for the COD engine. Maybe gained another frame or two. Maybe not.

This is weird...

Q6600@3.4GHz, 4GB DDR2 @ ~1GHz, Gigabyte P35 board, 8800GT (at stock for now), and plenty of wattage. Logitech KB&M but I'm pretty sure they're not affecting my frame rate ;)

Reinstalling COD4 as we speak - just downloading the 1.6 patch - so we'll see if that helps. I've lost my profile now but screw it.

Did you uninstall your old drivers??? You have a decent system so I would assume you're computer literate........

Well let us know if that does not work....

Oh and about the keyboard and mouse take a look here

LINKY

You would be surprised what some keyboard and mice cause.

I had this problem and while it is pain to fix it is fixable. I don't think that post (I linked) has the actual fix. Just showing you someone with the same symptoms.

Let us know.

Thanks

UPDATE: I removed COD4 completely, reinstalled, repatched, and loaded it up with default settings... No improvement...

As I said above I uninstalled and cleaned with Driver Sweeper in safe mode before loading the new drivers. Yea I could safely be described as computer literate. This thing has me stumped at the moment though.

OK, try this. Bit of a shot in the dark but try it.

Open Device Manager (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound)
Open the Human Interface Devices Tab
Disabled ALL of the ones starting with HID-Compliant Device

You will probably loose a little of the keyboard and mouse functionality but just try it.

Re-launch the game test your FPS. Report back.

What FPS you get if you are at 640X480?

Hmmm it's getting late over in London huh?

Now that was an interesting test - there is no improvement in frame rate going to 640*480 from 1680*1050. It's still unplayable. I know this points to something other than the graphics card, but it can't be network because the problem exists in SP too, and it can't be the processor because I can still run superpi just as fast as before. It has to be the graphics card.

Thx for your help btw MrWizzard.

No Problem. Yep most likely it's not the video card.

I want to get a screen cap when I get home to show you to see if we are on the same page on the HID devices.

You try updating your mouse and keyboard drivers yet?
While you are at it try disabling your sound card, reboot, running the game to see if that does anything.

I have a feeling it's a device that is causing the bottleneck.

If you have not, try this too although it wouldn't really be a fix just a work around as it would be nice to be able to update the drivers some day.

Ok got a screen cap for you. Notice all the HID devices. Even one of these is enough to cause the fps slowdown so you have to make sure you get them all. In my case I had one hidding in "Mice and other pointing devices"

LINK

So you are saying you disabled them ALL and it had no effect right? Which is possible I just want to make sure you got them all.

Right, so I have now reinstalled the 169.25 forceware, which is the exact version I had before this started. No improvement. That's the fifth set I've tried - some newer, some older, some beta, some WHQL. There is apparently no difference between driver versions. It must be something else.

MrWizzard - I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with HIDs. I disabled them all again just as an experiment, but there is only two of them, corresponding to the mouse and keyboard, not a whole bunch like you have. It didn't make any difference. Besides the only way my input devices could be causing this would be some kind of horrific driver conflict, but I've never manually installed a KB or mouse driver on Vista, I just use the defaults. I've had these devices for over a year and nothing has changed recently.

Anyone got any more ideas? I really don't want to reinstall windows :(

Have you tried using system restore to roll back to a point before the problem started?

Edit: Also, uninstall CoD 4, clean any registry entries and files it might have left, reinstall.

That is a excelent idea.. although I don't know if you would still have that entry with all the changes you have done recently it may have been purged to make room for all the recent ones. But try that.

OS re-install, that would really suck.

Well I do have a restore point for 24/04/09; four days ago and before the issue. Just tried rolling back. Guess what? No change!!!

*twitch*

Already done it. New profile and everything.

LOL, well if it was me at this point I would start swapping out hardware, but I have enough spare parts to do that. You could try an OS re-install, but that is a lot of work. Do you have an extra hard drive that you can re-install to? That way if it does not work you can always just plop the current os reinstall back into the computer?

OS re-install might fix it but even then, if it is a driver or software issue it will probably come up again at some point.

At least the OS reinstall would let you know if it was software or hardware related right. If it is hardware the problem will still be there after the OS re-install.

Out of curiosity I forgot have you taken away your OC to see what happens?

This is bugging me wish I was there to swap out components.

I assumed none of this was relevent but hey I'm clutching at straws now...

Things I have did to the machine directly before the issue:

- I wrote some Javascript which caused Firefox 3 to develop some kind of mental problem. That's fixed now.
- I messed around with Project64, the N64 emulator - I think I was trying to get a texture pack to work properly. I installed a couple sound and video plugins on Project64. They shouldn't affe4ct anything when P64 is not running. Right?
- I installed Left 4 Dead. this is when Steam prompted me to upgrade my drivers.

Have you tried rolling back to before that? Even though we are clutching at straws, too bad you can't get your hands on a retail copy of COD4 that does not need the steam app.... what if it's something to do with the steam app that is causing it?
