With no new games coming out I went back to replay Call of Duty 4, never played it on Veteran so thought I'd give it a go. Kept on getting the iw3sp.exe error when loading the game from the shortcut and also when using the main exe.
Worked for a while using the DVD autorun, then started getting the same error.
After checking tons of posts on the same error, I tried everything and nothing helped. Most recent patch, headphones plugged in, all that crap. I don't have Alcohol or any other virtual drive software installed so I completely ignored it.
At some point looking at my drives in Explorer I noticed a random CD icon, checked it out and discovered it's the U3 software included with my Sandisk Cruzer usb drive. Removing the drive worked, but I use it for Readyboost so that wasn't a convenient option.
I never use the U3 software anyway, so decided to get rid of it.
Found a great blog post here:

And removal tool is here:

Just thought I'd share.
Oh, and COD4 Veteran is pretty damn hard.
