CoD4/FW 2.0 causing PS3s to die

Well, my PS3 just randomly died today while playing CoD4. No power lights, unable to power on (tried switching the switch, different cables, different outlets, etc).

Apparently, a lot of people are having problems with this. It's either CoD4 or the firmware update...or both.

Sony is going to replace it for me...again. This will be my third PS3.

Not sure why I'm telling anyone this, but if you don't want your PS3 to die, you may want to avoid playing CoD4 on it.
 
Everyone knows the PS3 wasn't designed to play games. 😉

That's a bit odd though, it wasn't your first time playing COD right?
 
The only time my Xbox locked up was on Cod4 MP Beta, and the first or 2nd time I played the retail version.
Perhaps it's buggy?

No, I've played it a few times already. This problem has happened about 3 time already, but the previous "deaths" would go away after flipping the switch on the back of the PS3 off and on again.

There's at least 20+ people on the PS boards that have the same problem as me...it's either 2.0 or CoD4 (leaning more towards the game, as that's where people get the "crash of death").

That's what I'm guessing...reports generally claim it happened with CoD4. However, our system did do the shut-down thing after playing Warhawk...of course, it worked after that.

guess it's a good thing I'll be playing CoD4 on the PC eh? FW 2.0 hasn't caused any problems on the PS3 for me, but all I've played since grabbing 2.0 is the Uncharted demo. Waiting to play PS3 until my DualShock 3 arrives this week. 🙂

Where did you import yours from? I'd like a DS3, but I'm not sure who has the best prices on it.
 
hrmm thats a pretty big mess up if firmware is bricking ps3s. even worse if a game is doing it. that just should not happen at all.

I pre-ordered it on ebay, from this big importer. Ended up costing me $65 after shipping, not too bad considering the actual DS3 will retail for $50.
