CoD4 framerate drop during menu

I got a 4850 about a month ago and have been playing CoD4 heavily since I can now play it with high graphic settings. All of a sudden when I started it up today, the fps kept dropping during the main multiplayer menu. My fps keeps dropping down to 2 fps for a couple of secs, goes back up to >40 for a sec then back to single digits. My temps are fine when running, they've handled fine at higher temps before when I was actually playing the game. I have no idea what to do about these sudden fps drops, and it doesn't seem like a video card or cpu problem.

Have you done the obvious restarted your computer?
Are you using the latest drivers?
Virus Scans? Spyware Scans? Running anything in the background?

I've restarted it a couple of times, no dice. I'm using catalyst 8.7 drivers and CoD4 has worked fine on those so far. I don't think I've done any major updates or changes since I played it the other night. Nothing running in the background. I really have no idea what is causing this or how to go about fixing it. Thx for the advice though.

Try the latest catalysts. I think the drivers you're using might incorrectly put the card into the low power mode when the menus are up.

I think I knwo what you are talking about.

I had frame rate problems during my load screens as well but I figured it was b/c I didn't have a legit version of the game.

I've heard of other people having this problem since the game came out, but I've never seen any way to resolve it. It just seems to be an ignored issue.

What did you have before the 4850? Was it another ATI card? If so, there may be some legacy crap. I just fixed my sons PC that had an x850xt that fried and I put in a x1950xtx and the originally installed drivers, while they worked, caused a slowdown in some games. And even when I reinstalled with the latest CAT drivers it was having issues. U ran the uninstall utility and it asked me which drivers to uninstalled and showed the old 850 and the 1950 cards. I uninstalled both and did a fresh CAT install. Everything is smooth now.

When I got the 4850 I uninstalled the drivers first, installed the card, then installed the 8.7 drivers. The game has been running fine for a month. I haven't really changed any settings, and now suddenly I'm having this fps problem. I've searched around and haven't been able to find any solution to this, though I've seen other people with the same problem. So far it seems unsolvable.

I had the same issue... Alt+Esc out of COD4 and open the task manager, in processes find cod4SP.exe or something similar, and set the process priority to realtime... should fix it.
I had the same problem for a while, and that fixed it, although you'll need to do that every single time =

Hope I helped.

wow that worked. thank you so much, I was beginning to lose hope.

Is there really no other solution than this? It seems like there should be a fix or a general permanent solution for it. And any idea on what causes this problem?

Yeah I was really frustrated about it myself when it happened to me after I had just paid $60 USD for that game.
Mine doesnt do it anymore, but I'm not sure if it was a driver update or COD4 patch that did it... but it doesnt do it anymore for me.

Happy gaming 🙂
