COD Black Ops Newb Questions

Thinking about picking up COD Black Ops after watching some YouTube videos about it.

Quick questions.

1. Is this a you vs computer game or is it you vs other online players? I'm used to playing Counter Strike over a server against others, that's what made it fun, playing with others.

2. Can you communicate with other players? Verbally or by typing?

3. Do you play on servers owned by the game company or by ones set up by individuals like on CS?

4. Is there a fee to play on servers?

5. Is it secure? I don't viruses or my computer getting hacked.

As you might have guessed I'm only interested in playing online against others and would just like to know how similar this is to CS.

Thank You.

Online is strictly you vs. other human players. There are no bots or other AI, except for certain kill streak rewards that give a temporary automatically firing device.

2. Can you communicate with other players? Verbally or by typing?

Both.

3. Do you play on servers owned by the game company or by ones set up by individuals like on CS?

I can't answer directly, but when I played COD4 (which I believe Black Ops clones directly in terms of servers / server browsers), most / all were privately owned. They're popular games, and you should have no trouble finding many populated servers.

4. Is there a fee to play on servers?

Same as above - I can't say 100%, I've never heard of any fees aside from buying the game itself. Everything was free.

5. Is it secure? I don't viruses or my computer getting hacked.

I've never heard of getting a virus or hacked by playing a FPS online. I'm sure it's possible, but IMO, you're at no more danger than you are with playing CS or CS: S. Don't go around downloading mods, cheats, hacks, etc. and you won't have any problems. I'd be more worried about visiting Google images or something similar than I would about playing COD or CS online.

As you might have guessed I'm only interested in playing online against others and would just like to know how similar this is to CS.

It's very much like CS, but a bit more arcadey (not that CS is much of a sim these days). There are more guns to choose from, and various kill streak and death streak rewards to mix up the combat. I've personally been playing CS and CS: S for years, but I much prefer the COD series for online play these days. CS: S is still tons of fun, but I've found that it gets old too fast.

One of the biggest differences you will notice between CS and COD is static health vs. regenerative health. In CS, when you get shot, it takes away some (or all) health and that's what you have left for the rest of the match. In recent COD games, when you get shot, you're wounded for a period of time, but after several seconds you're back to normal. You have to put enough bullets in your opponent to put them down fairly quickly, or they'll be alive and kicking again soon enough.

THanks for the response.

I forgot one question.

Do you know if my lowly 9500 GT can handle COD BO?

I suppose I'll need to upgrade if I want to play with all settings on max with a 24 inch monitor at high resolution.

You'll like hardcore mode, it's less health and it doesn't regen. Also there's no map and no markers for gunfire (typically gunfire registers a player on the radar unless they have a silencer)

Hardcore Search and Destroy is pretty comparable to CS.

Yeah I've been watching this guy's videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/xJawz

I haven't played CS in about 4 years, I quit because it was too addicting. Hopefully I can play and not get obsessed like I did with CS! I once played CS for 18 hours straight, only stopping for Taco Bell and showers. Brutal!

Just letting ya know ahead of time, playing CoD and not getting addicted doesn't go well together.

it has single player campaign and there is a mode where you can play against bots to practice.

Need a upgrade. GTX 460 would fit the bill fine for you.
I would avoid the game like the plague though, you will find it is very boring game.

I would skip right to Bad company 2. Its very very fun and addicting.

I disagree. Call of Duty games are much more comparable to CS than Battlefield games are. COD focuses on a small area with room to room battles. BF focuses on a wide-open battlefield with a number of vehicles to mix things up.

If you're looking for a big change, BC2 is worth a look. If you're looking for something similar to CS, I'd go with the COD series.

I play all three (CS: S, BC2, and MW2 - soon to be Black Ops), just for the record.

I've played some of the BF series of games and I found the shooting and player movement very difficult. I like the almost unrealistic smoothness of CS, and COD appears to be similar. The shooting is fast and movement is quick. I played BF2 and it was like playing a 10 year old shooter game with good graphics.

i say the opposite. BC 2 is very boring and unfun. CoD is very very fun and addicting.
