Agreed. I've seen and heard of some fairly grizzly incidences where holding on to a spooked bird when lacing those knives up can get real messy, although those happenings are rather few in occurrence and most of those that do occur have alcohol or batu involved.

Psychologically, I can't see much else than "finally and at last I am really going to win fame and fortune via the prowess of my chicken". That tells me too that the surrounding culture has little use or opportunity for men in general, that it is opportunity stagnant and backward, sort of like ones that pay a lot of attention to football, etc.

Culturally engrained overseas and brought to Hawaii where cockfighting is illegal yet the cultural imperative lives on no matter how many and how often rings are raided , Haleiwa and Waimanalo being the most notorious. Some really tasty food is sold at the cockfights though.
