Cockroaches

A friend of mine and I both seem to remember reading an article some time ago about an enormous kind of cockroach. What we *think* we remember is that it could be 6-12 inches in length, and can be found in South America (Brazil?)

Anyone know what we're talking about? Google failed us, but we may be google-retarded.

When I visited the Smithsonian in 1980, they had an exhibit of live cockroaches from around the world. One species was wide, flat, gray colored like wood chips and was about 2 inches long. Another visitor standing behind me remarked something to the effect "And I thought I had a problem with roaches. Can you imagine those things running around my house?"
