I have been living with german cockroaches for years now. They are absolutely a pain in the a$$. I have done and tried everything that I could find on the web.

Now I need you guys to help me from your own personal experience.

Should I contact an exterminator, how much would that cost?

What about Insect Growth Regulators?

You probably need a professional. I highly doubt that any atoter is a professional externimator.

I did termite and pest control work for several years back during summers in college. I can assure you that there is nothing available to the general public that will eliminate a cockroach infestation. I've even been to homes where it took 2-3 treatments of licensed chemical to get it under control. Once you have them bad, it's next to impossible to get it under control.

So don't waste your money on anything you can buy without a permit/license. If that stuff worked, you wouldn't still be having problems after all these years. Call a licensed exterminator and make sure they are using the required dosage/dilution. If you have them bad, don't expect one trip out to fix the problem though. And prices vary. It has been since the early 90's that I did it and back then, we charge $75 for the first visit.

Edit: There are some NASTY people out there. I remember going to homes where when I opened the front door, roaches literally fell off the top of the door and on to my head. If you opened a kitchen cabinet, you may see 20 of them on the inside of the cabinet door. Of course, these were the homes where there were rotten potatoes, onions and other crap under the kitchen sink and food debris all over the counters but yet they couldn't figure out why they had roaches. Not suggesting that's how you live, OP. Your post just made me think back to some of the homes I treated that were really bad.

I think you're pretty much screwed until the Americans can launch an offensive along the western front and the Russians mobilize from the east.

German roaches were a little gift I got when I moved into an apartment a couple years back. Combat Roach Killing Gel wiped them out, hard and fast. It took maybe 7-10 days to get almost all of them, with the rest gone pretty soon after. I was impressed.

Make a dough out of 50% flour and 50% boric acid. Add sugar to taste. Apply in thin layers to dark corners, under the sink and other similar areas.

It's important to run a clean shop. I have no idea how you tolerated cockroaches for so long. I'd go crazy with pesticides if I even saw one.

Buy a flat of Preying Mantis eggs and let them hatch out in your house. Sure, you'll be over run with Mantis' for a while but I guarantee they'll eat all of the bugs in your house. Plus, they clean up after themselves as they're canabalistic. Then, you can name the last one 'Bubba' and sell him on eBay.

Bengal roach spray has always worked well for me. Just dont breathe the stuff. Bengal tends to work well on almost every pest i have seen at my house.

I have heard of people setting lizards loose in their home. The lizards eat the roaches, assuming they stay on the premises. Gecko I think.

Just thinking about how much roach sh!t is in your house makes me want to puke. As soon as you saw the first one you should have called an exterminator.

1 roach = 1,000 roaches.

We had an infestation about 2 years ago (brought some stuff in), used that (we found ours at ACE hardware) and never came back, now we have ants come in the window

A drop of Dawn dish detergent onto the back of a cockroach turns into a few minutes of fun. They do the death dance...quite entertaining.

And just so you know, having roaches in your house doesn't necessarily mean you have a dirty house. We had roaches in our house growing up (palmetto bugs...really big roaches that smelled REALLY bad when you crushed them) and mom always kept a clean house. We lived out in the woods in the middle of Florida.

I enjoy using RAID... the blue bottle, the one that claims to last for 6 months. The roaches have a little seizure before dying when you hit them with it.

Wherever you see the roaches, spray it. If you cook/clean/etc there, inconvenience yourself for a while. You won't kill any roaches if you only spray where they don't run. Spray along where the wall meets the floor & esp in corners of the room. If you have any boards/cabinets that have space behind them, spray there too.

Just go agent-orange style with the RAID and you should give those fvckers a run for their money. That's how it worked in my dorm at least.
