Coaxial Cable Amplifier Question

My house has 4 TV's hooked up to cable and 3 computers using Cable internet, we have 1 line coming in to the house, Split into 3 in the basement, then going too two bedrooms and a family room., one of the bedrooms also has Cable internet, I have a splitter splitting it from the wall to the cable modem and a TV, but when split it will occasionally give me a dead connection or browsing the web will get less then 300Kbits, while if i bypass the splitter and plug directly into the wall i will get ~3Mbits. I was thinking of purchaseing a Bi-Directional Cable Amplifier, but dont know how much it would help. Anyone here ever used one of these?

does it work?
