Maybe not quite coast to coast. Buddy and I want to take about 3 weeks to go to drive from Ohio to hike the Grand Canyon in either the spring or next fall.

I've never been west of Grand Rapids, what should we do on the way there? Going to try to travel as cheaply as possible, camping most nights and staying at friends houses the rest of the time. What's interesting between Ohio and Arizona? Anything?

There is no coast in Arizona. You may need to change agenda slightly.

Just go all the way to California, too. Awesome place, and really close to Arizona.

Spend time at the St. Louis Arch.
If you drop down to I40, you may enjoy Sandia National Labs.
If you have the time and choose to take I70/I80 across, Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks are well worth the stops.

Best bet would be to get ahold of the AAA guide books for each state and dig through them.

You can use Vegas as a launch point for the Grand Canyon. The North Rim is much nicer than the AZ South rim.
We also have the Hoover Dam here. Worth a half day for that tour.

Ahh... Hoover dam, forgot about that. And what's there to do at Sandia? I have a couple friends who work there, you're talking New Mexico right? I forget exactly where, is it in Santa Fe or Alburqurque?

Not sure if we'll get as far north as Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, ect. Thinking on the way there hit St. Louis, KC, Oklahoma and on the way back Colorado, Iowa. I'll look up Lake Powell and Death Valley.
