The real coaches Boone and Yoast came and spoke at my university. It was pretty interesting to see how these two men are like in real life. It is clear that they are good friends because they see to get along while still making fun of each other. They spoke about diversity and confilct resolution, but the best part was the Q and A session where they didn't have prewritten speeches and anyone could ask almost anything about them.

They mentioned a few things that were different in real life than in the movie:
-When Sunshine replaced Rev as quarterback, it was not because he was injured, it was because Rev taught Sunshine to play better and Boone replaced him just because he was a better player.
-When the brick gets thrown through the window, Yoast's daughter was not actually there and the brick was actually a toilet bowl filled with feces.
-Boone would not actually have been fired if he lost a game, it was just something that the mayor said in a restaurant.
-Boone actually visited the families of every member of the team just to see where they came from and what their home life was like.

How do you throw a toilet bowl through a window? They had to have been directly outside the door or something rather than a car..

I know that movies based on true stories are never perfectly accurate, I just thought it would be interesting for you guys to know which parts aren't. In fact, I was going to ask them what they thought about Disney's interpretation of their story, but I didn't feel like asking the question in front of the entire audience of a few hundred.

And the movies "inspired" by a true story shouldn't even mention the true story because it may mislead people to think the true story is anything like the movie, which in fact the movie usually has nothing to do with what really happened.

I grew up in the Alexandria of that time and would have attended TC Williams had we not moved in summer 1968 and the Alexandria depicted in that movie had not existed after 1960. They played very loose with the facts including leaving out that what actually took place that year that was so controversial was not desegregation of TC Williams. The school opened in 1965 as an integrated school as the segregation issue had been settled in Virginia years earlier in a shameful act known as "massive resistance". Alexandria was well into their initial desegregation plan by the time TC Williams was opened. I know this because I was actually affected by this between 3rd and 4th grade when they changed the school district boundries I was shifted to a different elementary school as part of that initial effort.

What actually happened during the time period of "Remember The Titans" was that the city changed the school districts so that all juniors and seniors in the entire city went to TC Williams while freshmen and sophomores went to the remaining 2 schools. There was a lot of resentment from the students that had expected to graduate as part of Francis C Hammond and George Washington High Schools, both long established schools in Alexandria, that they were moved 1/2 way through their high school years to a new school. The problems were compounded by the resentment of the other schools in the AAA sports leagues that suddenly Alexandria was fielding varsity teams composed of the best players available from what had formerly been 3 seperate teams.

I liked that movie. And I don't htink you have to worry about giving spoilers for a 6 year old movie. heh. If you haven't seen it by now, too bad for you.

I liked the movie, but it was so overplayed. When I was in hs, at least in three of my classes, teachers played this movie when there was nothing to do ( like at the end of the school year )
