summary- meh

www.coachella.com

Let's just put it this way, in the past year they've fallen from Bjork on the first day to Jack Johnson as a headliner. Portishead and Kraftwerk on day 2 should be nice and of course the non-headliners (where its really at) are of some quality, but still considerably fewer. I wouldn't mind catching Animal Collective, Stephen Malkmus, The National, M.I.A, Akron Family amongst many others.

i see roger waters in there.. i wanna see him but not at coachella.

The other bands most of which i have seen, not sure if i should buy the tickets when it goes on sale. 300 bucks for a concert is a LOT for teh 3 days, but i may have to.

Wow. Jack Johnson is such a weird headliner. I wanted to go to last years Coachella, but my friend in LA pussied out. This year, that lineup isn't appealing at all, which is good, 'cause I'm in London for 6 months, anyway :)

I gotta say, in an OPEN AIR setting, roger waters will be poor at best.

roger waters at hollywood bowl = cool
roger waters in indio = not cool

headliners are meh, but they're still plenty of great bands that show up...except for Saturday, there's maybe 5 acts I'd want to see that day.

Wow, there isn't one artist I'd like to see. I've never heard of a lot of them either, though.

Not the best lineup they've had, but still plenty I'd want to see:

Friday:

Jack Johnson - isnt my favorite but will be kinda cool
The Verve - I forgot they reformed. kick butt!
Breeders - You wish you were as cool as Kim Deal.
Tegan & Sera
The National
Stars - A personal favorite. They are better is small venues, but I haven't seen them in a while. I love them.
Rogue Wave - I haven't seen them yet. Been wanting to.

I will also check out: Animal Collective, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Battles, Aesop Rock, Vampire Weekend & maybe Jens Lekman

Saturday:

Death Cab - cliche, but still good
DeVotchKa - YES YES YES YES. Such a great band. I love them.
Cold War Kids
Stephen Malkmus - I though he was in jail??
St Vincent - I dont like the production style on Amy's last album, but she's special. Would really like to see her outside the studio.

I'd be curious to see what kind of crowd M.I.A. drew. I can't quite get into her, but some people go nuts over her music.

Sunday:

Love & Rockets - elder statesmen. Hopefully a good show and not a money grab. How old are Daniel, David & Kevin now? 50?
MY MORNING JACKET - If you go, please do yourself the favor of getting a good spot for these guys. Incredible live act.
Justice - Should be insane - will they be in one of those techno tents?
Metric - and god willing, Emily Haines pushes the boys off stage and plays at least one of her solo songs. I don't really like Metric, I just like her. Easy on the eyes too.
Black Mountain - Another band that a friend likes. They should be loud and Zepp-ish.
Sia - she's attractive, at least.

Not the strongest lineup, but I'd go just for the ones above, especially those in bold.

I like how people are saying "not the best lineup" and likely havent heard of 90% of the bands. Just cuz you haven't heard of them doesn't make them not good. That's the general point of Coachella in the first place.

I've seen some videos of some of the past Coachellas. Usually it's only the headliners that some decent while the rest sound amaturish at best (and god awful at worst) or maybe they just don't translate well on film.

St. Vincent is Annie not Amy :p She completely shreds on guitar and her live show is amazing. I don't know about such a large space to see her though.

Saturday seems the day to go. If you can find the videos of Portishead last year at all tomorrow's parties, the new songs are amazing. Several other up and coming bands are on Sat, New Young Pony Club, Teenagers, Bonde Do Role, Uffie. Erol Alkan and Sebastian are decently known in Europe so it's nice to see them coming to the states.

I think everyone expects them to have these huge bands come together every year and there aren't that many huge bands to go around. Plus there are a ton of other festivals now that compete with Coachella as well.

I'm tempted to go. Not necessarily for the bands, but to check out the atmosphere there. If anything I'll go Saturday to check out Sasha & Digweed perform.

they were charging some 250 for a 3 day pass last year. for those prices, there better damn well be headliners.

morning - 6pm = new acts
6pm - close = money acts

Yeah I'm aware of the pricing. ANd ther certainly are headliners at those shows every day.

Jack Johnson? Tegan and Sara?

Portishead? Death Cab for Cutie and Kraftwork?

Love and Rockets? Roger Waters and My morning Jacket?

Those are some pretty damned big and hot names in the indie world.

Compared to...

RHCP, Tool, Madonna, Rage, Radiohead, Cure, Underworld, etc, etc, etc.

Compared to years past I hardly call those "headliners". And seriously, closing a show with JACK JOHNSON!??! wtf mate.

oh. I love roger waters and shelled out a shitload to see him at the hollywood bowl, but I gotta say he's a poor, POOR choice for coachella. He's limited to what, 90 minutes MAX? At least by himself he runs through an hour of music, + DSoTM in it's entirety (with Nick Mason when I saw him to boot). By himself? I figure time, wish you were here, money, comfortably numb, brick in the wall, probably a song or two from his solo career.

Those are all mainstream bands and never the intended purpose behind the festival. Love and Rockets reunion is pretty damned big. Jack Johnson is flat out huge, and indie bands don't get much bigger than Tegan and Sara do right now.

Maybe not your cup of tea but nonetheless big big indie names. And seriously. I you are bitching about $250 for a three day pass to see a 100+ bands I don't see how you can complain WHO they are.

Maybe, but like I said, if I'm paying that kinda cash I expect to see 106.7 names and not 103.1 names ;)

They sold out HUGE last year for RATM, and sold out huge a few years ago for Radiohead. Will it happen this year? HIGHLY DOUBTFUL.

pwned. LOL. Thanks. I think I called her that at a party the other night too. No wonder so many eyebrows shot up.

She completely shreds on guitar and her live show is amazing. I don't know about such a large space to see her though.

I've seen some videos of her playing live, which is why I want to see her. I really don't like the 80's inspired production on her album, but she looks completely captivating when she plays live,a nd yes, it does appear that she shreds when she wants to.
