co-worker is a victim of a chinese hacker

Pepsei

Lifer
this morning, when he log in to check his paypal account. his paypal setting was all in chinese. and someone named chen chow (i translated it for him, it was in simplified chinese characters), took out ~$150 twice.

his password wasn't easy to hack, had numbers and punctuation in it too.

it may have been a rogue store that he visited, (the last one he purchased anything from was stop-n-buy.com), the site did deliver the stuff, so maybe the hacker compromised the site itself.

or worst, the chinese hacker hacked paypal?

for start, he called paypal already and disputed those charges and called the bank. he also used my computer to changed the password.

anyone have a similar experience and how to deal with this?

If he used your computer expect you to be targeted next just for revenge. :Q

Waits for Pepsei to start posting in Chinese.

more then likely he logged into paypal from a scam email and that is how they got his log in and password. doubt it's related to where he bought form previously.

he's more careful than i am. that's why i'm baffled at how they got his info. we both work in IT securities so we're very careful with scam emails....

it's strange chinese people would use paypal... since the word " paypal" sounds like ?? (which stands for "losing money explosively")

someone had hacked my bank account, transferred money to paypal and attempted to take it...

I caught it in time. My password was very long and unique.

Sounds like he needs to stop buying WoW gold from IGE-knockoffs.

nope, he doesn't play WoW at all.....

in this room, i'm the person most likely to get hacked. because i'm too lax....

Happened to me a couple months ago. Called up paypal and had to argue to the CS rep that I wasn't located in China. They also got into my hotmail account which was linked to my live.com cashback, but reset the password pretty fast over the phone.

Extraordinarily unlikely. If someone did that they would never reveal themselves for a few bucks, they'd just skim $0.01 off every transaction for the next ten years, and then buy a small country. It is likely either a) someone stole the password off a bit of paper or the home PC or b) someone accessed a smaller site and used stored details to make a purchase. In either case the word 'hacker' is used incorrectly.

Generally they get in through the password recovery. Have your friend call paypal, contrary to the horror stories you hear they are actually quite friendly.

Took maybe a week or two.

That's strange.

I used my paypal recently after not using it for a year and my account was in Chinese too. The account was locked as well but there were no transactions or anything made.

I wonder if it was hacked into?
