Co-worker got in an altercation yesterday in SF with tree huggers..

In his words: He was walking in the downtown area when he tried to throw a napkin he'd been using into a trashcan, but missed..and instead of picking it back up he just continued on.

Three cyclists then approached him and told him to pick it up--though I'm unsure what sort of language was used. He then told them to go to hell, being the charming British guy that he is, which resulted in a couple of the guys punching him directly in the face. He then walked on, not wanting to escalate it.

He himself is about 6'4 230-240, a rather imposing figure..and he describes them as tiny, though probably a lot more fit than he is.

I'm not really going to take any sides here, since I didn't actually witness it all..but has anyone ever get into an altercation with tree huggers before?

Seriously though - why do you think they're tree huggers? Littering in a city really doesn't have much environmental impact. Maybe they just don't think it looks good to have trash thrown on the ground in their city? I'd feel the same way. One time I shot a tree just to watch it die.

I almost always retrieve the item if it missed the garbage can, but there have been times where it was windy and I declined to chase the item down the street. If someone random came up to me and insisted I pick it up, I'd tell them to go to hell too. Littering is bad, but approaching people in a hostile manner on the street over littering is a lot worse.

however, there was this one time where i missed, and i was on my way to pick it up to put it back in. A b!tch looked @ me, and said "WTF, pick up your own trash!!" what the hell, can't she see i'm bending down to pick it up? dumb hot b!tch. she proceeded to pick it up herself and throw it away, giving me a nasty, albiet sexy, stare.

Punching the guy was wrong, but what's wrong with accosting someone for littering? There's nothing wrong with caring about the appearance of your town and letting people know that it is not appropriate to treat the world as their trash bin.

I've had a similar situation where someone told me to pick sometihng up after I had thrown it on the ground, and I jsut told the person that if they really cared they could pick it up and throw it away. They just got a really shocked expression on heir face and I walked away. Funniest part is the idiot didn't even pick up the trash, apparently he just like telling others what to do and not doing it themselves.

EDIT: also, imo it is not appropriate to tell some complete stranger to go pick up their trash I personally can't stand people who go around trying to tell me how to live my life like that. IF someone tells me to pick up a piece of litter I left i will ignore them, if they push the issue then I would deffinitely rather fight than pick up a piece of trash. Its the principle of the think you know, being all high and mighty and telling others what to do like that isn't your perogative.

If you litter around here, you can pretty much assume you'll get a hostile approach if anyone catches you doing it. It pisses me of when people are too lazy to throw away their damn garbage.

The "hostile manner" was a key part of the sentence. If you're not someone's guardian or part of law enforcement, you shouldn't be approaching someone in a hostile manner, period. Caring about the appearance of the town is not more important than caring about the safety of the town, and if you routinely approach strangers in a hostile manner, there will be many fights.

Saying "Excuse me, you missed the can, could you please pick up your trash" is fine by my book. If the person doesn't comply (most people will be shamed into complying), than you have the option of finding the law. You never have the option of getting in someone's face with a couple of your buddies and trying to intimidate them into compliance.
