My central heater (probably a 1970s unit) comes on sometimes but it only blows cold air. I have to turn it on and off a few times before the heat starts coming. Is there a possible CO danger from this?

You didn't state what type of heat you have.
Electric heat would carry no danger of CO, but if it is Gas or Oil, there is always a danger of CO present.
