cnr is typically for NIC's

amr can be audio/modem

You are better off avoiding them since it is hard to find those types of expansion cards.

AMR= Audio Modem Riser.

CNR= Communications and Network Riser.

Finding peripherals for these slots in the retail channel will be difficult indeed. These are meant for OEM's so they can "say" they have a 56K modem, onboard audio and networking etc. IMHO they're the stupidest thing to grace a motherboard yet.

And then there is ACR advanced communication riser. all are close, and newegg advertises the ece 735 chipset with a ACR but it has a AMR.
I don't know how much they are different, but I coundn't care less if my board had one or not. I wish they would just do away with them and put a built on nic on every board, that would be worth something.

I was just curious, I knwo what the two stood for, but since modems are a type of Communication device, and I found a solid source of AMR modems I wazs just curious if you could stick an AMR modem into a CNR slot... prolly not....

A CNR is an AMR, with the ability to interface with the integrated NIC built into the south bridge of the chipset.

Therefore, AMR is for sound and modems; CNR is for sound, modems and NICs.

You can plug in AMR cards into CNR slots.

They are not always the same. Some boards take cnr, while others take amr. It makes a difference whether the slot is at the top of the board above the agp slot or on the bottom below the last pci slot.

Hhmm...that's true.

Some manufacturers place the notch around the wrong way and force you to buy a proprietary riser....*cough* ASUS A7A266 *cough*....

actually amr and cnr are basically the same thing. but amr was made by an industry consortium, and cnr is made by intel. acr is backwards compatible with amr. b

Well I have one of each sitting here on the bench and they are NOT interchangable socketwise.

Bah, seems to be more trouble than they are worth. ANother thing put in there for just OEm manufacters.... specially when the PCI counter parts are cheaper and easier to find...
