One of CNN Money's worst articles that I've ever seen. Just stupid, inane and lacking in any details that can be used by others to learn from.

OP, check the link before you post in the future ...

When did manufacturing jobs pay $90k?

My father in law worked in a paper factory. His highest year was in the low 80's. He was just a grunt, but worked all the time. His base pay was ~$24 an hour in middle of nowhere NC. Tons of OT if you wanted to work. But it caught up with him as he is now out of disability making nothing and has nothing to show for the money he made as he pissed it all away.

What did she get that nets $90,000 ???

Not many jobs left that net that after manufacturing was sent overseas.

Service jobs don't pay much.

You know those people called nurses?

They can make a shit ton with just an ADN. They can make even more with a BSN. And with a Masters they can make even more.

My mom with an ADN, made over $105k last year. Sucks she didnt really see $35k of it.

My advice to anyone contemplating school or just starting school is: become a nurse and move to where nurses are needed. Start off with an ADN, get a job, then work on BSN, etc etc.

The ADN is the best bang for buck degree you can get. There is no comparison. For about $10k you can get a degree that you can easily start out making $60k or more. Hell someone can get it for more or less free if they become a CNA(3-6 month program, typically $900.) and then work for a hospital that will pay for them to become a RN.

They forgot #10 - be White. At least, that's what I gained from that article.

I wont get angry at young dumb bitch near me making too much money.
But I will say this:

To be fair, the average person simply increases their standard of living when they make more money. They just piss it all away. Most folks do NOT put it in savings or investments.

true, because most folks don't want to spend it when they're old and grayed. Instead they are enjoying their life. Give and take. Own the porsche now or when you're bald?

You can still do it responsibly without putting anything into savings (though long-term that's how you can multiply your money).

Buddy of mine was laid off in June of 2009. He was maing about 65K as a software developer. By the end of the summer the SOB took his salary to 150K\year by becoming a CIO of some startup tracking food supplies for the FDA.

Right in the middle of the worst recession in 2 generations and he more than doubles his salary after being fired. I just laughed.

LOL, what were the other tips? Be born into a rich family? Find buried pirate treasure? The best part is the lack of any details that one might possibly be able to use to replicate their success. In the end it basically boils down to "be lucky" without them.

Anyway, CNN is pretty dog shit overall. Just go to the front page some time, 50% of the stories are just inane crap or about celebrities or other unimportant things. You might as well just watch E! news.

LOL, you are a moron. Service jobs are not limited to McD's.

You rail against wall street (service jobs) and then say they don't make much.

BTW, I work a service job (all financial positions are service jobs) and I've been making more than $90K for quite a while.

The worst article I had ever seen from CNN some a sob story about people having a hard time finding work in 2008. The list included a guy who quit his job to become a painter, a chick who had a management position paying 90K\year to go back to school and become a lawyer. When the lawyer idea faded tried to get her job back and was told no. Some idiot sales guy who was making 6 figures who quit his job to become, get this, a real estate agent in the middle of the crash. It was like a parody article from The Onion.

The worst one I saw was trying to drum up sympathy for people who were foreclosed on. One of them was a single mother of 1. She was an Administrative Assistant making "$90k/year" that purchased a $500k house on an interest only loan, then got laid off. IIRC, nearly all of them were foreclosed upon because they were spreading themselves ultra-thin and life came over and toppled their house of cards.

Some of the articles are good (or at least interesting), but the "10 Person" articles tend to be complete garbage meant to try to drum up sympathy for people who did something stupid or people who want to brag about their luck.

Tech stuff pays a lot. Requires smart people. I mean we write things that automate tasks to make peoples jobs go away like say paper records. Saves money in a recession.

Hell I tell most of my friends to look every year because there is always better. All I know is software and such pays much more now than 2006. And stuff like houses is cheaper. Not to mention the first dot com bust scared everyone away from it. The only mistake your friend made was not ditching that 65k job earlier and looking. 65k is crap if he is any good and has experience

Back in the 90's I used to work with old farts like this that were flat broke. You should have heard the bitching from them about how they were broke. I asked each and every one of them why they never saved any money and got the same answer every time. They did not care and said they had one hell of a good time when they were younger. One guy worked in nuclear power plants making big money. He lost his job because he failed one of the tests he had to take every 2 years. I remembered one time he was bitching hardcore and raised his mop up yelled at me "LOOK AT ME I MOPPING THE GD FLOORS NOW". I was laughing my ass off at him. I learned one thing I'm not ending up like those fools.

Yet another pulitzer worthy article from CNN.

Screw journalism... go for ratings. Fox News has set the bar so low that as long as you're not lying as blatantly as them on a regular basis, you got integrity.

Crappy article got all of you to visit their site and be peddled shit by their sponsors!

i am a software dev and in january of 2010 i left my first job out of college (middle of the recession)

now, just over 2 years later, i'm making a tad under double what i was making when i quit.

it's REALLY made things more enjoyable for my wife and i with all the vacations we can take comfortably AND i'm saving WWAAYYY more than i was back then. im talking like saving thousands a month liquid + roth IRA and 401k.
