Survey: 10 jobs moms work would bring in $138,095 a year

First off...where would that money come from?

Second off...do people actually expect to get paid for the work they do in their own home / family?

Third ...This furthers the stereotype that mothers work so hard and fathers do nothing.

Im not putting down moms, I think their great, in fact I have one. Its just articles like this end up doing more harm than good.

That is so much BS.. laundry operator, van driver, etc.. I guess being an unemployed student I fill half those roles. Does that mean my work is valued at $50,000/year or something? No, what I do is the cost of living day-to-day.

Here's some text from that link:

"The typical mother puts in a 92-hour work week, the company concluded, and works at least 10 jobs. In order of hours spent on them per week, these are: housekeeper, day-care center teacher, cook, computer operator, laundry machine operator, janitor, facilities manager, van driver, chief executive officer and psychologist. By figuring out the median salaries for each position, and calculating the average number of hours worked at each, the firm came up with $138,095 -- three percent higher than last year's results. (Audio Slide Show: Evolution of motherhood)"

Wow, that's pretty good...since I do almost all of those myself also as a single guy, plus I work anywhere from 40 up to 80 hours a week, does that mean I can get a sob article written for me on how hard my life is?

I should make like way more than what I do now I guess...bummer...

I think you guys are missing the point... It's supposed to be a 'Mother's appreciation' article in preparation for Mother's Day, not to be taken literally.

I don't get it, why are these guys taking such offense about it?

It is one of the most valuable positions in this country, its just an "unpaid" monetary wise.

It does not discount the work of fathers or working mothers either. It simply lays out what they would be worth should those hours be dedicated elsewhere. You could extrapolate and add the value the other parent adds when you figure out how many hours they put into their child's upbringing while not at work as well.

Actually, I would say that $138,095 is very underpaid.

A good mother is priceless.

So when a mother is criminally negligent with their child and the child turns into a criminal does that mean we can 'fire' the mom for dereliction of duty?

Welfare moms rejoice, big payday coming.

And people around here wonder why they don't get laid.

If you have a wife that is a good mother, you'd better treat her royally.

They repeat this study on all news channels every year. So why are you blaming CNN?

There are two flaws with that "study".
(1) They ignore men. Most men don't just become lazy slobs the second they set foot into the house door. Many men are: (Full time workers) + (household CEO) + (household CFO) + (mechanic) + (lawn caretaker) + (babysitter) + etc. Add those up and have a real comparison of the true value of PEOPLE and not just women.

(2) They ignore supply and demand. Suppose all of these people just started working all of those jobs. The supply of labor would skyrocket. The demand would be the same, and thus, the salary for each job would plummet. In the end, the average household would be earning the same as what they earn now (in the mid $40k range). There just isn't $140,000 per person floating around. Or if there were, inflation would make that number worth about what $45k is worth now.

Sweet jesus, some of you need to lighten up.
It is a feel good article about Mothers and how their worth is underestimated.

You have people in this thread crying about how men arent included and if there was a true labor market for this wages would drop?

Get out a little and enjoy life,

sheesh.

Its just a stupid article, but I do agree with some of the sentiments expressed in the thread. It makes it sound like fathers don't do anything at all. Moreover, a lot of those tasks are done by single people. Most people don't sit around and calculate how much they should be paid to wipe their own ass.

But watch out when you marry one of these 21st century women. They expect you to pull your weight around the house and I have a BMI of 28.

It was a cute piece . . . recycled. But I will give the OP a little bit of credit. For some of us that pick up the kids from daycare, cook dinner, feed two toddlers, bathe them, and put them the bed . . . while the wife is out having dinner with colleagues . . . putting a price on parenthood kinda misses the point.

Having said all that, I agree with PingSpike . . . I'm astonished by the single parents (typically mothers but a few fathers) that do it everyday by themselves . . and likely have a crappy job (or three) just to make ends meet.

So I guess I'll point out the obvious to everyone...

This is a mother's day article. Mother's day is right around the corner. So relax... In through the nose... out through the mouth... There are stories like this published every year in the first week of May.

Mothers Day is TWO WEEKS away.

Are they going to run a similar article for FATHERS DAY?

And where in the article was mothers day mentioned?

Why do they need to mention Mother's Day? Everyone should know the timing of this piece coincides with the holiday. You should know by heart exactly when Mother's Day is and appreciate all of the work and loving care your mother hopefully provided you. :|

A mother looking after her family out of a sense of love or duty != the mother being a money hungry whore. :disgust:

A good mother = priceless.
