CNET top 10 games of the past 10 years

I don't see UT2k4 in that list.

I don't see Q3 in that list.

But of course, multiplayer doesn't count

I only glanced at it, but it seems like a pretty well chosen list to me. I might argue that Unreal (1998) should have been on the list, mainly since it was the first mainstream FPS to have beautiful huge outdoor environments and not limit you to tiny rooms and corridors (as far as I'm aware). Then again, I might just be an Unreal fanboy. 😛

Edit: Not to mention the relatively easy to use modding tools (level editor) included with the game. I think that was huge for spawning a community...

Zelda: ocarina of time was the best game ever for any system and i have played many games before.

no other game even comes close to matching it. such a spectacular game

So everquest is singleplayer then huh?

It is all opinion but I'm just impressed and surprised that:
a.) half life was #1
b.) starcraft was even on the list
c.) there are as many or more PC games than console ones (since Halo, GTA3, madden, and MGS were all PC games as well)

They must be kissing some major M$ butt to put Halo on that lol.

System Shock 2 is only one of MANY games that I consider more worthy and memorable than Halo. Or than GTA III for that matter, even though I can assent it was a sort of milestone.

Ah well. There can never be a truly definitive game list imo. Just too many valid differences in games and the gamers who love them.

No FF3 or chrono trigger. No love for System Shock 2 either.

FF3 was more than 10 years ago and CT was released in early 95 so it's technically a little more than 10 years ago.

😕 Everquest? Starcraft? Quake? Halo? They were all very popular multiplayer games.

Surprised Tribes didnt make the list considering its outdoor atmosphere, teamwork, base building, and mod capability.

Where the Heck is DOOM and CIV-NET (aka Sid Meier's Civilzation from 1995)? Doom Got the whole FPS genere started and CiV-net was the first (and still very popular) game that got the whole real time strategy started, Games like WoW possibly owe their existence to CivNet. And not one single game on there is 10 years old! What a joke! It should have been called the greatest games of the last 6-7 years. Quake would have never existed with out the success of the Doom series.

The Original is still so popular in fact that is has spawned an Open Source Clone calle Free Civ. Probably In the top 10 greatest games of All Time (or should be).

Pretty decent list. Obviously won't appeal to everyone and it's way to hard to choose just 10 really great games in the past 10 years. I mean where's Diablo(series) and games from other genres. I say pretty decent list. Impossble to make one that everyone will agree with though.

The gameplay itself was so addictive that players often played the game through three times just to experience it from the perspective of all three races.

?? 3 campaigns of starcraft isn't playing the game 3 times. ack

Tribes is still the most engaging game of it's genre to me. I even reinstalled the original recently and have been pubbing it every night. I didn't mention it here because in spite of what a great game it is to me, I'm aware that a relatively smaller number have played it in comparison to a few of these others.

I'd elevate it above merely game and classify it as true sport, or potentially so anyway. It's heartbreaking how Sierra has let down the franchise by lack of support.

"Top 10 most influential games of the past 10 years" should be a less misleading title.

Else we'll have people saying things like it's useless without Planescape: Torment.

Halo? LOL! Sure, if you don't mind boring and repetitive gameplay.

QFT

Yup, other than that the list looks pretty good. Haven't played a few of the games, but will take their word for it. 😉

Many of the other games mentioned in the thread I could see making it on the list, except Q3! 😛 😀 Only 10 can make it though so some games that compare well with those on the list were bound to be left out.

dude, Doom came out in like 1993. Doom 2 came out in 1994.

no doubt Doom was influential, but this is a list of the 10 most influential games in the last 10 years.

but i totally agree with you in that both games should be on the list of Most Influential of All Time
