CNC3: Crash with laptop

A friend of mine is having a bit of trouble playing CNC3.

The game works fine for the tuturial, but crashes in skirmish missions. It runs perfectly with low details, but crashes without warning a few minutes into gameplay. Smaller maps tend to last longer than large maps, but it still crashes within 4-5 minutes.

Relevant specs:

Dell Inspiron 6400
Core Duo T2300 (1.66GHz)
1GB RAM
Intel GMA945
Game installed on external 250GB USB HDD

My guess is that the integrated video isn't cutting it, but I figure I'd get a second opinion.

i'd probably agree but having it on an external HD probably isn't helping either

The integrated video you point to is probably the main issue here. You've got enough RAM and your dual core is more than enough to run this game.
