CMOS Checksum Error - Defaults Loaded??

I have just tried booting up my newly built computer for the first time, but I couldn't get into BIOS because an error keeps coming up:

CMOS Checksum Error - Defaults Loaded

I can't do anything, it won't let me hit the Del key after that message.

Whats the problem?

MY SYSTEM:
Abit Kg7
512 DDR PC2100 Crucial - 2 DIMMS of 256MB
Athlon XP1700

PS - I have already checked the DIMM connections and checked to see if I put them in the correct slots, and still no resolve.

This could be 2 things...faulty cpu or failing cmos battery....

Try the cheap one first and go pick up a lithium battery like the one on the board....go to radio shack...most likely it...

Common error showed up with ECS mobos...battery was the fix

First, I would make certain that the CMOS clear jumper is set to 1-2 and not 2-3, If it's on default already I would clear the CMOS(don't forget to unplug the power supply first) and try to access the BIOS again. In Appendix E of the PDF on-line manual in the Q&A's it says that you should always clear the CMOS when installing the board. If you still can't enter the Bios then make sure the keyboard isn,t at fault. If it's working correctly and it's USB then use a PS2 adapter to connect it and see if that resolves the issue.Let me know how it's going and I hope this helps you out

Hey, thanks for writing about the CMOS problem. I am unsure about how to clear the CMOS. I know I have to move the jumper to 2-3, but what do I do then? Also, I forgot to mention that it said I had an Athlon XP 1100, and not 1700. But I'm thinking this could be because I need a BIOS update.

read the manual on how to clear cmos. and try to power on after you are done. This might and might not solve your prob--but worth a try.
