Hi. Yesterday, I built my first computer. And since then, I have had so many problems. Here are the specs.
Athlon 64 3000+ s.939
MSI K8T Neo2
2*516 mb corsair value ram
XFX Geforce 6600gt 128mb (vga)
Samsung SP1614N 160 gb 7200rpm ideo hard drive
liteon dvd writer
some sound card
some video capture card

Anyway, I put it all together (which i know i shouldn't have, i should have just put the main parts in, not even the hard drive), and plugged it in. Well since then it has been working ok except everytime i boot up i get a error like "cmos wrong" or "cmos/GPNV Checksum bad". I tried resetting the CMOS by using the cmos reset jumper pin, but it goes back to CMOS wrong the next time i boot it up, and then to cmos/GPNV Checksum bad". I don't know what to to about this, I have heard mixed ideas about this.

Also, even though this error was occuring, I procedded to install Windows XP SP1. It installed fine, and then when I got that installed, I installed the drivers that came with my mobo (Via chipset driver and some other stuff). I installed that, it made me reboot the computer, and then when it booted up i installed my video card driver. Well, after that installation it made my computer reboot, and since then it has not been making it past the windows xp title screen (with the bar on it). It doesn't make it to the loging screen, the video just shuts off, but the computer stays on. I have rechecked the cables and stuff but I don;t think that that is the problem.
Also, when my computer WAS booting up, in windows xp i noticed some wierd things. For example, when I was in a situation where I could scroll down or upon the screen (ex. a long text document), the scrolling lagged (like the system was under a lot of strain). However, the computer was quick in other concerns.
I know this has been a long letter, so thankyou very much for reading this and helping me. This is my first build. Thanks a ton!

You might have a dud Mobo... when I was taking my cert prep class, there was a guy that had the same problem with his mobo. Everybody else was fine. Take everything back apart and start with just the mobo, vid card, hard drive and cd-rom. wipe the hd and start with just a dos promt, see if it still has the same problem.
Keep us updated on your progress.

I tried that, and the same error was there, (with just the video card, cpu, mainboard, ram, and power supply). I was thinking that it was the mobo. thanks a lot for responding!

First thing I always check with a checksum error is the battery. I know, new mb and all, but the battery might have sat in the manufacturer's warehouse, the distributor's warehouse, and the board makers too. Had a new one go dead in a week once.
