CMI 8738 drivers Windows 7

Has anyone been able to install drivers for onboard CMI 8738 6 channel sound drivers for Windows 7? I tried the Win 7 drivers from the CMI website... but they keep telling me to install the PCI soundcard.. which it "is" there.. since its onboard. I looked at the mother board and there is indeed a CMI8738 chip... its enabled in the BIOS.. it shows up in Device Manager as a multimedia device.

I'm trying to get my Dad's computer running on the cheap. I suppose I may have to spring for a $20 audio card.

Does the motherboard manufacturer not have drivers?

no drivers from Manufacturer. Its a Soyo board. I think Soyo is long gone.

The sound chip should be generic. I can get a SB soundcard for around $17 so probably worth it for the effort I've already taken.. as I was DETEREMINED to find a driver for this darn thing.

The reason the sound drivers don't work may be because the chipset drivers were not installed.

Then again, the chipset drivers may not be compatible with 7. But it's worth a shot.
